Rugby
Congratulations to the 1st XV and Christ's College for their hard-fought annual college day match! In the 131st year of rugby between these great rivals, both teams showcased their skills in pristine conditions at Linfield Park. With a brilliant crowd in attendance, Christ's College led 25-15 at halftime. However, our CBHS boys staged a remarkable comeback in the second half to secure a 34-25 victory. Well done to both teams for a spirited and competitive game!

Football
Mainland have completed regrading, and after some strong showings by our U14 Blue, U15 Blue and Black teams they were moved up 1 or 2 divisions. Saturday’s games saw the U14 Blue and U15 Blue maintain their unbeaten starts to the year. The U14 Black team completed back-to-back wins showing their continued improvement. The U15 Black team had an entertaining game going down 4-3 for their first loss of the season. The U17 Blue team had a great game before going down 1-0 with Parklands scoring from the spot with a minute to go. The U19 team have continued to work hard in a very competitive U19 grade. Playing boys who are all a year older has made it a big step up for them.

Cross Country - Canterbury Secondary Schools Cross Country
The annual Canterbury Secondary Schools Cross Country was held this afternoon on the old Ascot Golf Course. A team of 15 Boys' High athletes competed at the event.
Year 9
It was a team of six that contested the Year 9 race. First home of our Boys' High lads was Conall Latham who with a time of 12.43 was the sixth Christchurch athlete. Next home in 9th was James Stockdale 13.14, followed in by Kento Stephenson 11th - 13.21, Johnny O'Regan 24th - 14.15, Caleb Mears 26th - 14.29 and Edward Bateman 38th - 15.14.
Our four-man team of Conall, James, Kento and Johnny were the 2nd placed team. Well done to these boys.
Under 16
We had four runners contest a particularly strong U16 race. Percy Haughey was first in of the Boys' High contingent in 15th spot - 12.40, followed home by Dallas Fox 17th - 12.45, George Hegan 22nd - 13.07 and Callum Busfield 29th - 13.50.
This four-man team were the 3rd of the Christchurch teams to finish.
Senior
The amazing return to form of Year 12 runner Max Aldridge was the highlight of today's senior race. Well placed in the top four early, Max worked his way into second place on lap two, a position that he solidified through laps three and four, to finish the 4km in a time of 14.57. Max has been an absolute star for our group since Year 9 and it was a thrill to see him back to his competitive best today, just nine days out from the nationals on the same course.
Also performing with distinction in the senior race were Mark Weir 10th - 15.59 and Henry Sevier 13th - 16.18. These two boys are also looking good for next weekend. Completing the Boys' High four-man team was Ashton Kitson 46th - 22.03, while Finn Hawkins was next home in 23.25. The four-man team placed 2nd, behind Burnside High School.
Well done to all the boys with their commitment to the event. Also, a big thanks to Janelle and Ricardo from our Sports Department for supporting the teams.
Cross Country Nationals return to Christchurch for 50th anniversary
Host of the first New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country back in 1974, the event returns to Christchurch for the 50th anniversary this weekend. To be held this year on the old Ascot Golf Course, the event will feature 16 Boys’ High students with some strong prospects especially in the Senior Boys race.
We are fortunate to be able to field a six-man team in the Year 9 race. Conall Latham has been strong in all of the lead-up events and along with James Stockdale should be prominent amongst the Boys’ High runners.
In the junior race, we are represented by a three-man team. Percy Haughey and Dallas Fox both ran well in the Palmerston North event last year and will be joined in this year’s event by fellow Year Ten student Callum Busfield.
In the senior race, our premier athlete Cooper Wightman will look to take strong track results from Fiji into the senior 6km race. He will be joined in the race by Max Aldridge, an impressive 2nd in last week’s Canterbury Schools event, while Mark Weir and Henry Sevier will likely fight it out for 3rd spot in our three-man team. This year’s senior race looks incredibly open and our athletes should prove more than competitive in the event.
Max and Cooper (pictured above) – Canterbury Road Race 2021 and still doing great things for Boys’ High Cross Country.
Most of our athletes will then back up the following day running the Inter-Provincial Relay, representing Canterbury.
We wish all the boys all of the best for their races this weekend.
CBHS athletes perform well at the Oceania Athletics Champs
Three of our Boys’ High athletes have just returned to school after a week away in Fiji at the Oceania Athletics Champs. Cooper Wightman, Hunter Scott and Bill Quigley represented New Zealand at Under 18 level. All three learnt a lot from the trip and enjoyed the opportunity to mix with other top New Zealand athletes.
Cooper Wightman continued his rivalry with top Australian middle distance runner Daniel Williams. The two met in both the 800m and the 1500m. Tuesday’s 1500m proved a tactical affair, with the action only really firing up over the last 200m. It was only in the last 50m, that Williams came away for the victory in 3.59.44, with Wightman a close second in 4.00.02. In Friday’s 800m, the pair drew away from their rivals at the start of the second lap. Again, the young Australian proved too strong, easing away over the last 200m to take the win in 1.50.37, from Wightman 1.52.75. To be so competitive with the impressive Aussie speaks volumes about Wightman’s ability. International competitions such as these will be invaluable for his future endeavours. Two silver medals at this level is an impressive result.
Hunter Scott contested the 200m, 400m and two relays. Scott should be pleased about getting through the finals in both events against such hot competition. After being outside his best in the 400m final – 50.61, Scott ran an amazing race in the final of his favoured 200m, to take the bronze medal, recording a sharp 22.33 into a strong headwind. He then earned a bronze medal as part of the 4 x 100m team before taking a gold medal in his final race as part of the New Zealand Under 18 Mixed team. This team set a new, New Zealand record in the process. This completes a fantastic 2023-2024 season for Scott who will need put in the hard work ahead of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics in Timaru at the end of the year.
Bill Quigley was part of the throwing team, competing in the Hammer Throw and Javelin. A promising thrower who shows huge potential in his favoured Hammer Throw, Quigley also performed well on the trip. In the Hammer Throw, he was just outside his personal best with a throw of 42.31m to finish 5th, while in the Javelin he was placed 11th after throwing 42.24m. Quigley loved the experience of the trip, including the quality of the coaching that he received while away. He is another driven for a big finish to his Year 13 at this year’s schools’ Nationals.
