Westlake Boys Exchange | 2025 Results

Cricket:

CBHS delivered a dominant performance in their traditional cricket fixture against Westlake, securing a first-innings victory before the match ended in a draw.

CBHS & Westlake Cricketers at our recent exchange

Batting first, CBHS put on a commanding total of 366/8 declared, with contributions across the order setting a strong platform. In response, the CBHS bowling attack dismantled Westlake’s batting lineup, dismissing them for 120 all out and securing the first-innings win.

Following on, Westlake showed resilience in their second innings, reaching 272/3 before the match concluded in a draw.

A solid all-round effort from the team, with both bat and ball, showcased CBHS’s depth and quality in the longer format.

Golf:

A young and relatively inexperienced CBHS golf team faced two challenging days of competition against Westlake, battling both tough opponents and testing weather conditions. Strong winds on day one at Russley Golf Club gave way to rain and a biting southerly breeze on Tuesday at Harewood Golf Club.

CBHS & Westlake Golfers at our recent exchange

Day 1 – Singles Matches (Russley Golf Club):

Despite a valiant effort, Westlake largely dominated the singles matches, though two games went down to the final hole.

  • Harrison Lund – Lost 1 Down

  • Tom Gainsford – Lost 7&6

  • Johnny McBride – Lost 5&4

  • Tom Edwards – Lost 1 Down

Day 2 – Fourball Matches (Harewood Golf Club):

The second day saw a much more competitive showing. Year 10 players Harrison Lund and Tom Gainsford fought hard but fell 3&2 to a more experienced Westlake duo, with Harrison showcasing outstanding approach shots. Johnny McBride and Tom Edwards led for most of their match but were unable to secure the win, losing 2&1.

A huge thank you to Russley and Harewood Golf Clubs for their hospitality. While the results didn’t go CBHS’s way, the experience was invaluable for this young squad.

Tennis:

CBHS & Westlake Tennis Players at Wilding Park

Day 1 – Tough Matches in Hot Conditions
Despite the looming wet weather, CBHS played as much tennis as possible in muggy conditions. Westlake proved too strong across the board, with Ray Xu securing the only reverse singles win (6-2, 6-1). In reverse doubles, Ray and Liam Jones claimed a solid victory over Westlake’s second-seeded pair. The day ended with tightly contested seeded doubles, where Mitchell Keller and Koji Leek pushed their opponents to a super tie-break but fell just short, 10-8.

Day 2 – Fighting Spirit at Wilding Park
With poor weather forecasted, matches moved indoors. Ray and Liam won an entertaining reverse doubles match, while Isaac Boomer secured a singles victory after his opponent retired injured. Mitchell Keller delivered a strong performance, winning in a tie-break, and Ray’s battle against Westlake’s No.1 featured some impressive baseline rallies.

The CBHS squad showed great character and sportsmanship across both days. With the entire team returning next year, the future looks promising.

A sincere thank you for opening your homes and hosting a billet from Westlake. These exchanges wouldn’t be possible without the generosity and support of families like yours. The Westlake boys spoke highly of their experience, expressing their gratitude for your hospitality and the warm welcome they received. Many are eager for the chance to return the favour in the future.

Your kindness helps strengthen the bonds between our schools and creates lasting memories for everyone involved. We truly appreciate your support.

Many Thanks - CBHS Sport

CBHS Boys Shine in a Competitive Saturday of Rugby 9s

On Saturday 8th March, our rugby League boys showcased great, teamwork, and sportsmanship as they put their best foot forward in a competitive day of Rugby 9s.

CBHS Rugby 9s | 2025

From the first warm-up to the final whistle, the boys displayed great energy and enthusiasm, making for an incredibly positive and enjoyable day.

Under the superb leadership of Mac Chaplin, who took charge of the warm-ups and led from the front in every game, the team performed exceptionally well. Rugby 9s, a fast-paced hybrid of Rugby 7s and Rugby League 13s, put their fundamental skills to the test—particularly their catch and pass abilities, which proved crucial in helping them reach the final.

A Hard-Fought Final

The final was a thrilling contest. CBHS struck first, scoring the opening try, but St Thomas’s responded with three quick tries of their own. Not to be outdone, CBHS fought back with another try, setting up a tense final moment. With the ball in hand on the last play of the game, a draw would have seen CBHS claim victory based on their earlier round-robin win. Unfortunately, they fell just short, with St Thomas’s edging them 16-12 in a close battle.

Notable Mentions

Every player contributed to the team's success, but a special mention goes to Mac Chaplin, Hiro Fuchigami, Sione Telefoni, and Delahoia Kakoi for their outstanding performances throughout the day.

A huge show of character also came from Kolonisi Sokovayakawa and Uzziel Pepese, who, despite not being selected in the final 16, still turned up to support their teammates—running water and assisting where needed. Their selflessness and commitment to the team did not go unnoticed.

Results Recap

  • CBHS 28 - 0 Haeata

  • CBHS 22 - 6 St Bede’s

  • CBHS 20 - 6 St Thomas’s

  • CBHS 28 - 6 Rolleston/Hornby Combined

  • CBHS 12 - 16 St Thomas’s (Final)

Despite a tough loss in the final, the CBHS boys handled themselves with grace and class. Our boys showed maturity and respect in defeat—something to be proud of.

A massive thank you to parent coach Justin Wallace, whose support and organisation played a key role in the team’s success.

Overall, it was a super positive weekend for the boys, and their self-organisation, effort, and resilience were commendable. Parents should be incredibly proud of their sons for their attitude and performance on and off the field.
