Tournament Week | Hockey - 1st XI Rankin Cup

Captain Vivek Lallu in his last outing representing the Blue & Black of CBHS

Our 1st XI Hockey team travelled to Tauranga for the Rankin Cup this year. The tournament started with an intense and thrilling match, where we secured a 5-4 victory with a goal on the final hooter. The tension in that game set the tone for our pool stage.

Ollie Munt in Action vs Palmerston North

In our next two pool games, we delivered solid performances, winning 4-2 against Feilding High School and 5-0 against Hutt International. These victories ensured we topped our pool heading into the top 16 of the Rankin Cup.

Our first top 16 match saw us face a formidable Palmerston North Boys High School team. Despite our best efforts, we couldn’t overcome their strength and went down 1-3. This result meant that the highest we could aim for was 9th place, a goal the team embraced with determination.

The boys showed incredible resilience, winning all of their remaining games. We defeated Auckland Grammar 2-1, St Kent’s in a high-scoring 4-3 match, and Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Ruamata 2-1. The team's heart and grit were on full display throughout the tournament, proving their ability to handle pressure in crucial matches.

Jacob Suddaby vs Feilding High School

Although tournament hockey can be unforgiving, where one loss can limit your final standing, our young men gave their all and made the school proud with their performances on and off the pitch. They carried themselves with dignity and showed tremendous character, and we couldn't be prouder of their efforts.

Tournament Week | Basketball

Junior Basketballers in action at the recent Junior Zone 4 Competiton in Dunedin

Both our U15A and Senior Basketball teams competed at the South Island, Zone 4 Basketball tournament held in Dunedin. Entered in the Open grade, our junior team competed exceptionally well, winning the majority of their games and making it through to the Grand Final against Hillview. What a final it was; an intense game going into double overtime! With a narrow loss, the boys in blue should be extremely proud of becoming silver medalists. It was a fantastic performance.

The senior team had a very tough pool round with many highly ranked teams. The boys played hard and had some closely tested results. With wins over Kings College, Burnside and old foes Middleton, the boys ended up in 19th place. The boys should be proud of their efforts, and it was fabulous to see them wear the blue and black with pride. All the best to our departing Year 13s. We hope this is not the end of the road for your basketball-playing days.

Tournament Week | Southern Tour - Cycling

CBHS Cycling | Southern Tour

Our CBHS Cyclists had busy weekend of racing for 12 of our cyclists at the Southern Tour. Seddon (Marlborough region) put on the weather again for the tour. The Saturday was clear with a light breeze for the ITT and Crit. Sunday was extremely windy with many riders being blown off the road in very testing conditions. Great with the wind behind you but another story riding into it.

Overall, the boys stayed upright, raced with enthusiasm, had a good time off the bike and all made it safely home.

There were national titles (age group) for the ITT (3.5km - winner is the person with the fastest time on the course) and the Crit (1.1km circuit and varying laps based on age groups - u20 did 12 laps whereas u13 did 6 laps).

CBHS took out 4 titles:

  • Ben Davies (U14) ITT

  • Ben Davies (U14) Crit

  • Josh Davies (U17) ITT

  • Oliver Clark (U17) Crit

Special mention to both Ben and Josh Davies, who not only won the GC battle in their age group but also took out the Sprint Ace jersey and the KOM jersey (King of the Mountain).

All the riders represented the school over the weekend with pride and honour.

  • U20 Luca Sanders (4th in GC)

  • U17 Josh Davies (1st in GC), Andre Free (2nd in GC), Oliver Clark 3rd= in GC), Oli McNaughton (6th in GC)

  • U16 Sean Threadgall (7th in GC), George Hegan (8th in GC) Flynn Turnbull (11th in GC)

  • U15 James Trimboy (2nd in GC) George Clark (4th in GC), George Bishop (8th in GC)

  • U14 Ben Davies (1st in GC)

Next up is the Canterbury Schools TTT Champs (mid Sept) and then Road Nationals in Timaru over the first couple of days of the Term 3 holidays.

Tournament Week | Rugby - U15A Kahu

During Tournament week, the U15A Rugby Team attended the National Invitational U15 Rugby Tournament in Tauranga. Day one consisted of two games against Rotorua Boys' High School and Palmerston North Boys' High School. These were tough, physical games and provided a great challenge for the boys on day one. CBHS won both of these games.

The following day, the boys played fellow South Islanders, Otago Boys' High School, and managed to win the match 17-0. The next challenge was Hasting Boys' High School. The boys came away with a win 38-15.

The semi-final was an absolute nail biter. With only a few minutes to go against Westlake Boys' High School, the score was 30-28 to Westlake. As the match ended, Freddy Davis kicked a penalty that finalised the score at 31-30. This was a real moment of elation for the boys securing a spot in the final.

The boys were heartened by the support shown by supporters, both in Tauranga and afar for the final. Tauranga Boys' were formidable opponents and won the tournament 32 - 3. Our boys made themselves, their families and school proud with how they played and carried themselves.

Tournament Week | CBHS 1st XI Football

Congratulations to the 1st XI football team on winning the Jim Wishart Tournament held during tournament week at Rolleston.

CBHS 1st XI in action at the recent Jim Wishart Tournament held at Rolleston

Early wins allowed us to rotate our squad which would pay dividends later in the week. Strong showings from Tayne Leftly, along with key contributions from Royse Guan, Oscar Feek and Quinn Elliot saw us win our early games convincingly. The key match of the pool was a dramatic 1-1 with Hillmorton. Despite dominating much of the second half through Finn Elstob injecting some attacking control and drive, it was a last-minute dramatic stunner from Francis Gillies that eked out a late equaliser to allow us to take a qualification spot and a quarter-final against Burnside.

Captain of the 1st XI Jong Yoon Lee

That quarter-final was a torrid, slightly niggly affair. At 1-0 up after a fast start, Burnside was awarded a penalty. A great save from Jesse Jones in goal saw us score shortly after and largely maintain control of the match, finishing up 3-0. This saw us playing on our favoured service of artificial turf where we comfortably defeated Lincoln High School 3-0 to earn a spot in the final against Hutt Valley.

On a perfect turf with no wind out at Rolleston, we even had the Emirates Dreamliner flyover, for the final. After another good start by CBHS, Hutt Valley's high press had us under some pressure to close out a goalless first half. Despite creating several half chances, we were unable to take the lead, and despite being pinned back in our half, we still looked defensively comfortable with our stable back four of Luca Greasley, captain Jong Lee, Will MacKay and Eben Van Wyk. The second half began apace with Hutt Valley continuing their high press. More availability in midfield from Lua Otaki, Caden Goodmanson, Oli Williams, and Elliot Hallmark saw us able to play through Hutt Valley's press more effectively, eventually reducing them to largely walking pace as they ran out of energy and we moved the ball more quickly.

CBHS 1st XI Football at the recent Jim Wishart Tournament held at Rolleston

With time moving on, changes upfront from the tireless Finn Batten to Francis Gillies and Tayne Leftly (top scorer for the week) for Alexey Bazhak, had the desired effect of injecting renewed pace on attack on a wilting Hutt Valley. Francis Gillies used his blistering speed to chase down a through ball arriving just before the Hutt Valley keeper and nipping the ball past him and into the net for a well-deserved winner. After weathering the final few flourishes from Hutt Valley we deservedly secured the title, conceding only two goals throughout the week.
