Canterbury Secondary Schools Championships

Sunday 7th July saw sunny skies, plenty of snow and good times for members of our Snowsports team at the Aoraki Slope Style Championships. After some technical difficulties getting up the mountain, the boys did themselves and school proud taking a range of placings on the podium. The event required competitors to perform a range of manoeuvres on rails, boxes and  jumps.

Charlie Mooar | New Zealand Under 21 Korfball team in Turkey

During the school holidays our Year 12 student Charlie Mooar travelled to Kemer, Turkey with the New Zealand Under 21 Korfball team for the Korfball U21 World Cup Tournament. 12 teams competed in the Tournament and with Korfball a very popular sport in Europe the competition was awesome with the Netherlands winning the title. NZ settled in to the hot and humid environment quickly then put in 7 outstanding performances highlighted by very close, competitive & enjoyable games - including a convincing victory over our Australian rivals!

Charlie loved the challenge of the international competition, representing NZ on the world stage and exploring the sights and sounds of the local village of Kemer with his teammates - the call to prayer, mosques, markets and sweet turkish tea all very different experiences to savour.

Rugby in the Holidays | Wollongbar Rugby Club

CBHS vs Wollongbar

On the 15th of July, two touring teams from Wollongbar, New South Wales, took to the fields at Straven Road to compete against our U15 Kahu and Tui teams.

CBHS vs Wollongbar

In challenging weather conditions, all four teams gave their best effort, with both CBHS teams emerging victorious by the end of the day. However, the true highlight was witnessing the new friendships formed between the Australian boys and our players, demonstrating that rugby was the real winner of the day.

Coach Profile - Mitch Gibson

Mitch Gibson in action playing for HSOB

Professional Background

  • What inspired you to become a teacher/coach/manager? Growing up, I was constantly surrounded by great role models. Particularly throughout my time at high school. Since leaving school I have always wanted to follow suit and inspire the next generation.

How many years of experience do you have in coaching?

  • This will be my fourth year of coaching.

What is your coaching philosophy or approach?

  • I have been so lucky to be involved in some awesome sporting environments in my life. I believe so many valuable life lessons are to be learnt through sport. My aim is that at the end of each season, I have not only helped aid my team to become better rugby players but also better young men.

Can you share a success story or memorable moment from your coaching career?

  • Taking Napier Boys' High School to my first ever National U15s Tournament was a very memorable moment. Despite losing to CBHS in the tier 2 final.

Which age groups or skill levels do you specialize in coaching?

  • Currently year 9’s and 10’s are my specialized age group, as it allows to me to keep playing my own footy.

Personal Insights

What do you enjoy most about coaching?

  • The special bond that is created by a team of young men, putting their body on the line for each other in aim to achieve a collective goal. Comradery.

How do you motivate your athletes?

  • I don’t ask anybody to do anything that I am not willing to do myself.

What are your goals for your team/athletes this season?

  • Year 9 Prinsep have set the goal to beat every other year 9 team that we come against this year.

How do you stay updated with the latest coaching techniques and trends?

 Fun and Personality

What’s your favourite sports movie or book?

  • Moneyball

If you could coach any team or athlete in the world, who would it be and why?

  • Kobe Bryant. I would have loved to be able to experience the drive and determination that he had. Mamba mentality.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of coaching?

  • Wellbeing, health, fitness and travel.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

  • To give the best that you can, in any particular situation. No matter what that looks like; some days this will be so much more than others but as long as you know in your heart that it was the most you could give at that particular point and time then you will never regret anything.

Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?

  • I used to always brush my teeth before warming up. Otherwise, just a quiet night before a game.

Rapid-Fire Questions

Coffee or tea? - Don’t like hot drinks.

Early bird or night owl? - Wish I was an early bird.

Favourite workout music? - Liquid Drum and Bass.

Favourite sport to watch (other than the one you coach)? - Rugby League. Big NRL Fantasy player.

Describe yourself in three words.  - Hard-working, respectful, life-long learner.

 Community and Engagement

  • Honestly, the above is an area I would like to grow in dramatically over the coming years. Hopefully this will come as I gain confidence (only 25 and this is my first-year coaching at CBHS). But it is something that I will make a conscious effort to get better at.
