Basketball

Lorraine Dunn —

Basketball is a winter sport at CBHS. Matches are played in the 2nd and 3rd terms.

It is one of the fastest-growing sporting code at the school. Up to 10 teams are fielded in the Saturday Competitive competitions. The school participates in the Canterbury tournaments, our Senior A team also competes in the prestigious Thomson Trophy Competition locally.

The popularity of the game at CBHS has coincided with the rapid growth of basketball at schools in the country. In recent years it has transformed from a minor, niche activity to a major, mass participation sport. This has led to major improvements in the levels of coaching and umpiring and an increase in the quality of local competition.

CBHS enters basketball teams in the Saturday Canterbury Basketball Association competition and social basketball teams compete on Friday afternoons/evenings in the competition administered by School Sport Canterbury.

The school’s top basketball team plays on a Tuesday night in the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Thompson Trophy.

Under 17 and Under 15 boys' teams play on Saturdays.

Both competitions run through Term 2 and 3. Trials for Saturday teams are held during Term 1. The school is reliant on external coaches to support the basketball programme. Parent managers/supervisors are essential for teams entered in the Friday social competition.

CBHS currently has a permanent all-weather basketball court and an electronic scoring system.
