Mud, Sweat and Plenty of Tears

Krissteen Smith & Matt Parr —

On Sunday the CBHS staff entered 7 teams into the annual Mud, Sweat and Tears race at Motukarara. This was the largest group entry of anyone in the race and a fantastic effort from our staff.

A wide range of staff varying in age, ability, enthusiasm and physiques braved the wild and wet elements after months of dedicated training (not), to cover the 5km course. In good spirits and with loads of banter, 28 enthusiastic souls turned up in full costume.

There were two teams from the Physical Education department, The Young Guns and The Party Boys, a Guidance/International/ESOL team called GRIT, the Rat Catchers from the Social Studies department, andThe Scholars from English (who were the first of the CBHS mixed teams across the line).  E=MC Squared represented Science and ran in full business attire and last but not least, The Bold and the Beautiful was a conglomerate of truly beautiful people dressed in tutus.

With family and supporters cheering them on, the teams rushed off into the unknown murky distance. Needless to say, there was a lot of mud that everyone thoroughly enjoyed wading through, but they also had to clamber over obstacles, climb ropes, slide down mud embankments, slither under barbed wire and swim through chest high mud pits.

There were a number of notable finishes including a podium finish from The Young Guns of Messers Zarifeh, Watson and Mitchell who finished second in the team event. Congratulations also to Mr Lankshear who was the 4th fastest individual in the 5km event. We should also mention Mr Finch who, while running for another team, defended his team's title from last year and won the 10 km event.

By the end of the race the rain had finally stopped and the skies parted. Any early apprehension had been replaced with big smiles, especially after being treated to the culinary delights of bacon butties and bangers cooked by Mr Burtt, Ms Mowat and Ms Read. With food in their bellies, a warm drink in hand and a few good stories to take home, a great day was had by all.

A special thank you must go to Kristeen Smith for her efforts in corralling staff and organising the day.
