Old Boys Update

Nic Hill —

A number of Old Boys have been recently featured in the media.

Sam Watt has just won his third Super Heavyweight national boxing title in a row. Jared van Vianen and Tom Clyma have been competing in the World U23 Rowing Championships in Rotterdam. Jorgen Ellis has had his business success with Kitset Assembly Services promoted and of course, Anton Lienert-Brown should become the 46th All Black to come from Christchurch Boys' High tomorrow night against the Wallabies.

Old Boy educationalist Clarence Beeby has re-emerged in the international education spotlight. Dr Beeby was the first Director of New Zealand’s Council of Educational Research and finished his career lecturing at Harvard. 50 years after undertaking work on education in developing countries, Beeby’s 1965 book was the subject of a panel at a Vancouver Education Conference and his ideas are proving enduring. Beeby argued that educational change takes a decade and can’t happen unless the system has teachers who are well educated and trained.

Planning for the 60 plus luncheon on October 11 at the Cashmere Club is well underway and any donations from this event will be directed to the restoration of The Deans Buildings which will provide a home for the Old Boys. The Wellington and Otago Branches of the Old Boys Association have both made donations to this project which are very gratefully received.

Old Boy cyclist Keagan Girdlestone who was injured racing in Italy has returned home to New Zealand and was welcomed at Christchurch Airport by a school haka party which was captured on video.

The High School Old Boys / Burnside Hockey Club has had a strong season and a number of players have been selected for regional and national teams. To keep up to date with the club you can follow them on Facebook and their website.
