Waipuna Experience Builds Young Men

Paul Yeoman - Waipuna —

Throughout term 1, nine Year 10 boys volunteered to attend one day a week of rain, cold, wet, dark, difficult and stressful situations, in an endeavour to discover what qualities of men are grown in times of physical and mental testing and team support.

The fun of all this was interspersed with times of hilarity, thinking and reflection, discussion, food and a hot milo. Coasteering, bouldering, canyoning, canoeing, tramping and surfing environments became our classroom, and the learning was measured in decision making, assertiveness, compassion, teamwork and communication moved from being ‘easy words’ to being deep strengths.

'Adventure Therapy' looks like a cool day out of school, but it guaranteed to ‘push the boys’, to stretch life into shape, and grow the capacities to live it well. Well done to the young men below who invested some of their life into this programme. I trust it will repay a lasting return.
