Trapshooting 2018

Hilary Sinclair-Hyde —

The school trapshooting team has attended a series of competitions at various locations over the season and our shooters have consistently placed in each event at the Canterbury Schools shoots.

Schools competed against have been Lincoln High, St. Andrews, Darfield, Ellesmere College, Ashburton College, Timaru Boys', St Kevins College as well as the annual interchange with Otago Boys' High.

The boys have grown over the season consistently improving each week and each shoot. We started off with only 5 shooters from last year’s team and have added another 10 new shooters for 2018. The National Secondary School Championships are on our home turf this year at Canterbury Clay Target Club, McCleans Island (29 Sept – 01 Oct) where up to 350 students from all over New Zealand will attend the 3-day shoot.

The boys shoot the following:

  • 20 Targets Single Rise off 15 metres.
  • 20 Targets Points Score off 15 metres. 4 targets per lane
  • 10 Targets Single Barrel off 15 metres
  • 25 Targets Skeet

Outside of the school shooting events, the boys are fully immersed in the culture of the local clay target scene. They are well noticed by seasoned shooters and some of the boys have shot next to the New Zealand team which has enabled them to get advice from some of New Zealand’s top national shooters.
