Auckland Grammar/Westlake Exchange
30 boys representing the three codes of cricket, tennis and water polo flew up to Auckland on Sunday 25 February to compete against Auckland Grammar and Westlake Boys in the annual exchange. The weather was not conducive to outdoor play. Tennis had to move indoors and only 8 balls were bowled in the first 2 days for cricket.
Cricket then tried to fit 4 innings into an exciting days play. Grammar batted first declaring at 94/6. CBHS then made 138 all out in 34 overs. Grammar then batted trying to score runs quickly in an effort to set CBHS a total to chase. They declared at 162/8 leaving CBHS to score just over 130 in 22 overs. CBHS gave the run chase a full go and at the close of play were 91/6. The result saw CBHS retain the shield for another year!
Tennis
A very young Senior A team consisting of three Year 10’s and three Year 11’s has had a successful week up in Auckland. Auckland has a robust Wednesday competition which incorporates 14 schools in the premier grade, alongside students playing club tennis in their weekends.
Our boys played against high ranked tennis players and older players across the week. They made their opposition beat them by returning balls and playing point by point. At the end of day one Grammar held a 6-3 lead.
We started the day off really well winning matched doubles for Team 1 and Team 3. Great work from Ray Xu and Isaac Boomer, Jamie King and Mitchell Keller.
All the matched singles were really well contested against high ranked players. Unfortunately, we went down in all of these, but the boys contested the games in great spirit.
On day two Grammar proved a little stronger winning all 6 singles to take the tie 12-3. A huge performance from our Year 10 and 11 players.
Water Polo
CBHS played a 5-team tournament vs Tauranga Boys, Hamilton Boys, Auckland Grammar and Westlake Boys' High School. Despite losing all 4 matches the boys were competitive and showed huge improvements.
Our first of two games on Monday 26 March was against Hamilton Boys’ High School who have been top four in the country for the last couple of years. Our new boys went into the game nervous and not knowing how physical North Island water polo was. We had to try to adapt quickly however Hamilton took all their chances resulting in a 4-21 loss.
Our second game saw us up against our hosts Auckland Grammar, the boys put on a much better performance. We started slowly going into the second half 2-6 down, we bounced back in the third quarter making in 6-7 down going into the final quarter. It was game on going into the final quarter and we held them off for a good time before fatigue kicked in and Auckland Grammar created a gap to end the game 7-13 down.
Going into Tuesday 27 March and our last day of the exchange we were up against Westlake Boys’ High School first up. We went into the game strong ending the first quarter 1-1, however from there Westlake gradually started to extend their lead, which came off several errors and missed opportunities on our part, resulting in a 6-17 loss.
In our last game we were up against tournament favourites Tauranga Boys’ College. We started strong and only just missed out on several scoring opportunities. Tauranga took all their chances going into the second half 5-9 up. We again had one of our best quarters in the third getting the score back to 10-11 down going into the fourth quarter. Tauranga came back firing in the last quarter which left us going down 12-19, however this was by far our best performance of the tournament.
We left Auckland after we said our thank you and goodbyes, once again dressed in our best representing CBHS. We were popular amongst the Air New Zealand staff who allowed us to hand out lollies on the flight home and even gave the boys extra snacks on the flight.
CBHS Athletics
Cooper Wightman continues his golden form breaking the NZ U17 800m record. Cooper ran the race in a time of 1.50.46, just under one second away for qualifying for the World Junior Championships. Despite breaking the NZ record and going under the world athletics time, this is not deemed fast enough by NZ Athletics. He has however already qualified for the 1500m at this event.
CBHS Cricket
NZCT Year 10 Colts team played Christ’s College in the Regional Final on 20th Feb, a tight game going to the final over saw CBHS come away with an 11 run victory securing them a spot in the National Tournament held in Palmerston North later in March.
Our 1st XI has continued its unbeaten start to the year. Last weekend they beat St Bede’s by an innings and 70 runs.
Our 2nd XI batted the entire day to hold on for a draw against Christ's College 1st XI.
Colts blue team beat STAC by 10 wickets.
CBHS Volleyball
CBHS had two teams playing in the Canterbury Championships on the weekend.
Senior A, hampered by injury and illness, lost a couple of close pool games and several players. Final result: 12th in Division, 24th in SI. They will have a chance at redemption in the upcoming South Islands event in Tournament Week.
Senior B also entered the competition. A very young developmental team stood up well pushing all teams that they played, they finished 33rd.
Special Congratulations to Lennox Rua Limu Franklin and Sebastian Lubis - who made Senior debuts in Year 10.
Stand out player of the tournament was new student Yoash Mirisage (Open) who played excellently all weekend and scored the most points of any player of either team.
CBHS Water Polo
Senior A have started their season with two wins, beating STAC 9-3 and then St Bedes B 18-2.
Senior B also playing in A grade, took a victory over CCOL A 9-5, and then narrowly lost to Burnside A 6-3.
Our Senior Blue team playing in B grade is unbeaten after 3 games.
CBHS Mountain Biking

Downhill
U15 Seb Stettner 11th
U15 Joel Burkitt 12th
U17 Sam Dunnett 3rd

He has been selected to compete next week in the National SLS competition in Mount Maunganui. Last year he managed 5 National medals at this event which he trains for year round both in the beach and in the pool.
