Whānau Māori CBHS

Daniel Hapuku —

Christchurch Boys' High School’s Whānau Group meets monthly. We are made up of an enthusiastic group of parents and a student representative and have the full support and attendance of Senior Management.

Our aim is to work with Te Kura by helping to enrich the school’s strong Māori heritage. We would very much like to grow our numbers, so please come along to our next meeting on the 3rd September– 5.30 pm in the staffroom. We also have a Facebook page, “Whānau Māori CBHS” which we would encourage you to join even if you can’t attend meetings.

Whānau News

Marae Visits

The Whānau Group is currently working towards Noho Marae for all year Year 9 students of Te Reo Māori. This is intended to provide hands on educational experience and strengthen links with our local iwi, Ngāi Tahu.

Kapa Haka

We are very excited to announce that CBHS will soon have its very own Kapa Haka group. School is meeting with prospective tutors to make this an option for students in the very near future.

Secondary Schools Kapa Haka

Five of our boys have recently competed, with the combined group, Te Kapa Haka o Te Toi Huarewa, at the National Secondary Schools Kapa Haka Competition in Palmerston North. These boys and their families have done this off their own initiative so as to be part of a performing group and we are so proud of them all.

Teacher Development

Teachers have also recently been invited to participate in professional development at Tuahiwi marae.

Waharoa

At our meeting on Monday 30th we learned of the exciting plans for the Waharoa area (western hall entrance) leading into the school hall. The landscape architects were keen to hear ideas from the Whānau Group, and it will be an amazing area for learning, ceremony and leisure once developed.

If you would like any further information, please contact our Te Reo Kaiako, Daniel Hapuku by text on 022 1991608.

Next meeting: Monday 3 September 2018 – 5.30 pm in the Staffroom. All welcome.
