Gateway in Action

Sonia Eustace —

A number of our students are out in the community on Gateway placements at the moment. Take a look at some of the opportunities they have been involved with.

Aviation

Luke Rodger and Tim Light are gaining experience on their Gateway Aviation work placement with the Canterbury Aero Club. As part of this programme Luke and Tim have enjoyed flights with the Canterbury Aero Club Instructors, as well as visiting a private airfield at Swannanoa, the Christchurch Airport Tower and Radar Centre, and the Airport Rescue Fire Centre. In the next few weeks they are looking forward to another flight with the Canterbury Aero Club, meeting with Air Force personnel, and visiting Air NZ Maintenance / Prattand Whitney. Many of these opportunities are not available to the general public due to security restrictions. Luke and Tim appreciate they have been very fortunate to have been selected to participate in this programme and have found the experience valuable in making decisions regarding possible aviation related careers in the future.

Automotive Engineering

Logan McConnel is exploring automotive engineering through his Gateway work placement with Paul Kelly Motors. As well as practical on the job experience, Logan is completing Gateway automotive engineering units through Avon City Ford training. Logan has a real passion for cars and motor sport and is enjoying working alongside and learning from experienced mechanics on the job.

Early Childhood Education

Monteal Thompson is currently studying early childhood education units in the Gateway early childhood programme at Vision College. Monteal has also been gaining practical experience one day a week on his Gateway work placement with Annabel’s Educare, Avonhead. Monteal states that he really enjoys interacting with young children and getting to know them.

Building & Construction

Josh Allen is enjoying his building and construction Gateway work placement with Takahe Construction. Josh spends one day each week gaining practical building experience on site with the team at Takahe Construction. Josh finds his experience on building sites useful as he is able to observe builders on the job and this is helping him to decide whether building is the career path he would like to explore further. As well as this practical learning, Josh is also completing his building & construction theory units with BCITO.

All senior students are welcome to see Mrs Eustace, Gateway Coordinator, to discuss Gateway opportunities in all industries, no appointment necessary. Parents / caregivers are also welcome to contact Mrs Eustace, eustaces@staff.cbhs.school.nz
