Business & School Partners and Vocational Pathways

Phil Robson —

Christchurch Boys' High School's Careers Department continues to drive new initiatives around exposing our young men to the world to which they will soon be entering. Our Vocational Pathways Year 10 Programme aims to kick-start the school to work transition for students by raising their awareness of what is needed to be a productive member of the workforce.

Three classes (10 PSL, 10 ZRS, 10 MKP) have completed the programme in term 1. Three hours of class work and then a vist to a workplace. 10 MKP visited Dominion Constructors on a site visit to Canterbury University. You can see snippets of the visit in the video accompanying this report. PSL and ZRS visited Southbase, who are currently building the new school hall. Both of these visits were extremely beneficial to the students with feedback from them scoring the visit between 7-10 out of 10 for usefulness. Of course, many of the students will have little interest in pursuing a career in the industry being observed, but the work qualities that they see and hear about from employers are the same in almost any work environment. In almost all cases it is the 'soft' skills that are emphasised: teamwork, socially adept, following instructions, initiative, work ethic etc.

It might be useful to talk with your son about his experiences and review his career and learning plan. These are handed to the students once their interview with Mr Robson is complete.
