Geography Fieldtrip Reports - Term 1

Nigel Vernon —

Year 12 Trip to Mount Cook

Earlier in March this year the Year 12 geography students went down to Mt Cook for three days, spending the days at Mt Cook National Park and residing in Twizel for the nights.

We did various activities during these three days such as visiting the DOC centre, going for a walk to the Tasman Glacier Terminal Lake, walking the Red Tarns track and going to the Benmore Dam. Over these days, the weather was perfect, and it was nothing but good times.

The purpose of this trip was to gain an understanding of the Mt Cook natural landscape which was essential for internal and external standards. Walking the Red Tarns track gave us an insight into vegetation patterns. This trip helped us to gain an in-depth understanding of the environment which has proved beneficial.

Highlights of the trip included the walk up to Mt. Sebastopol and the arctic swim in the Tasman Lake, as well as the fantastic hospitality shown by the managers of the Twizel Rowing Centre.

Thank you to Mr Adams and Mr Finch for organising the trip and Mr Archibald and Mr Vernon for coming along for the ride. It was an enjoyable trip, full of laughs which made this trip once again one of the highlights of the year. Special thanks to all the boys, who never once complained or said "no" and therefore made this trip the awesome experience it was.

Year 13 Coastal Fieldtrip

The Year 13 students, as part of their understanding of “how interacting natural processes shape an environment”, visited two coastal locations in warm sunny conditions along the Canterbury coastline. Throughout the day, using a range of geographic techniques, the boys collected evidence that showed spatial variation along the beaches of North Brighton and Birdlings Flat. They will be using this data in their up and coming Geographic Research Assessment due in Term 2.

Special thank you to Ethan Peddie for managing to get out of bed just in time to join us a Brighton Beach.
