Debbie Vitany is fighting a losing battle against Fortnite. Her 17-year-old son, Carson, has been logging 12 hours a day on the video game, searching for weapons and resources in a post-apocalyptic world where the goal is being the last person standing. Teachers complain he falls asleep in class and his grades have plummeted.

As a community, issues surrounding online gaming and other site use is becoming more prevalent and a concerning aspect of our young people's lives. With the long summer break approaching, gaming other site use and screen time is something we need to think on, so habits are not formed and our young men begin to perceive the world through their choice of both games and what they are viewing online.

We have had incidents in the Junior School this year of students having inappropriate content and images on their devices, as well as social media issues surrounding pornography.  This week, the Chief Censor is set to release a documentary: NZ Youth and Porn, a study of 2000 teenagers identifying how and why young New Zealanders are viewing pornography.
