Year 12 Metal Work Class to visit Lyttelton Engineering

Louise Lambie, Gateway —

On Tuesday 14 May, Mr Fairhurst and Careers staff took a Year 12 Metal work class to visit Lyttelton Engineering. Mark Collins, the Operations Manager and shareholder in the company, shared his story and talked about the types of work they offer.

They are a large company and are therefore able to offer experience in several areas – ship repair, boiler manufacture and repair, steel fabrication and machining, and site installation and maintenance work.

Members of the team then split the students into groups, delivered a presentation and gave them a tour of all aspects of the Workshop.

Lyttelton Engineering like to invest in young people and take several new apprentices each year. They are keen to offer students a work experience opportunity before committing to an apprenticeship and have been working with our school to provide this opportunity to some of our students for several years.

The students met with a variety of staff including several ex- CBHS students that successfully completed the Gateway Programme at Lyttelton Engineering and are now at various stages of their Apprenticeships with the company.

The staff were able to share their experience of working for the company as an apprentice, and how they benefitted from having the opportunity to do some practical work experience when they were still in school.

If there are students interested in pursuing a career in Engineering, this is an excellent pathway. Please come and see Louise Lambie in the Careers Centre (F2) to discuss the options available or send an email to lml@cbhs.nz.
