CBHS Junior Sevens at the Crusaders 7’s Tournament
The Crusaders 7’s Tournament provided a valuable opportunity for the CBHS Junior Sevens team to prepare for the upcoming Condors National 7’s in Tauranga. The boys showcased resilience and determination, navigating both challenges and triumphs throughout the day.
The first game against St Thomas was a closely contested affair. CBHS started strong, scoring early and holding a 7-0 lead at halftime. However, St Thomas mounted a comeback with two tries in the second half. Despite the setback, the CBHS boys demonstrated incredible spirit, scoring on the last play, though narrowly losing 14-12.
Undeterred, the team elevated their performance for the remaining three games. They dominated their opposition with convincing wins, playing a fast-paced, cohesive style of 7’s rugby that highlighted their skills and teamwork.
This tournament proved to be a fantastic steppingstone as the team prepares for the Condors National 7’s in Tauranga next week. The boys will head into the competition with confidence, ready to build on their experiences from this event.
The coaching staff commended the team’s effort and growth, both on and off the field, as they gear up for the next challenge.

CBHS Junior Golf Champs
Congratulations to Will Wright (Year 10) who is the 2024 Junior Golf Champion after a hard-fought set of matches played at Harewood Golf Club. In the semi-finals Tom Gainsford was too strong for Liam Morgan winning 5&4, while 3 extra holes were needed to separate Harrison Lund and Will Wright.
The extra holes seemed to get Will in his stride, and in the final, he played some great golf, securing an impressive 4 birdies along Harewood's challenging back 9. Tom battled hard, before losing 2 down.

CBHS at the Canterbury Tennis Junior Championships
This past week, 11 junior players from Christchurch Boys' High School competed in the Canterbury Tennis Junior Championships.
The tournament kicked off early on Wednesday, with our boys starting their day warming up at 7:30 am under the guidance of Old Boy and coach Jimmy Meredith. It was fantastic to see their dedication and enthusiasm so early in the morning.
The competition was intense, particularly among the Year 10 players, where the high level of skill across schools proved challenging. Unfortunately, our top Year 10 players were unable to progress beyond the quarterfinals.
Tournament Highlights:
The standout performance came from our top Year 10 doubles team, Ray Xu and Henry Cooney, who battled in a thrilling two-hour match against Ashburton College. Despite their efforts, they narrowly lost in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (3), in a match that captivated all spectators.
Hugo Prain performed admirably, reaching the semifinals in the Year 9 competition but was defeated by the eventual winner.
Charlie Robinson also delivered a strong showing, making it to the Year 10 second division final, where he played exceptionally well despite narrowly missing out on the title.
It was heartwarming to see parents dropping by throughout the day to support the boys. Special thanks to Patrick Coady, Ricardo De Sousa, and Janelle Wilson for their presence and encouragement during the event.
Congratulations to all our players for their hard work and sportsmanship on the court. The experience will undoubtedly serve them well as they continue to develop their skills and represent CBHS with pride.

Junior Volleyball Season Wrap-Up: A Remarkable Finish
From November 19-21, our Junior A and B Volleyball Teams proudly represented Christchurch Boys’ High School at the South Island Junior Volleyball Championships in Christchurch. The boys showcased their skills, determination, and values throughout the competition, achieving fantastic results.
Junior A Success in Division 1:
The Junior A team placed 3rd overall in Division 1, marking the highest finish of any Canterbury team. Over the first two days, the boys secured victories against Trinity College, Nayland, TKKM o Te Whānau Tahi, John McGlashan, and Upwey (AUS). Their only loss in pool play came against eventual champions Nelson College.
In the semi-finals, CBHS faced a tough challenge against Garin College, narrowly missing out on the final. However, the team rallied in the bronze medal match, defeating Shirley Boys’ High School 2-0 in a rematch of the Canterbury Final, securing a well-deserved bronze medal.
Junior B Development and Spirit:
The Junior B team, primarily composed of Year 9 players, focused on development and building their skills. Despite a challenging start and going winless in the first two days, the boys displayed resilience and determination. In the 9-12 playoff, they bounced back with victories over Cashmere B and Rolleston A to finish 9th in their division.
South Island Beach Volleyball Championships:
On November 22, two CBHS pairs competed in the South Island Beach Volleyball Championships. The pairing of Mohammadi/Ali performed exceptionally, defeating teams from Nelson College (twice), Waimea, and Nayland to reach the final, ultimately earning silver after a hard-fought match against Nelson College. Limu-Franklin/Kikau also competed well, finishing in 16th place.
A Record-Breaking Season:
This season has been one of our most successful in recent years, with three medals across three tournaments. The commitment and growth displayed by our players have been outstanding, and the results reflect their dedication.
Congratulations to all our volleyballers on an amazing season, and a heartfelt thank you to the whānau and community for your unwavering support. Bring on 2025!

CBHS at the Junior South Island Championships
Christchurch Boys' High School showcased their depth and talent by entering two teams into the Junior South Island Championships, delivering impressive performances across the tournament.
CBHS B Team
The CBHS B team, bolstered by three players from Burnside High School, displayed grit and determination throughout the competition. They pushed every team they faced and ended their pool play in a three-way tie for second place. Unfortunately, they came out on the wrong side of the tiebreaker and crossed over in the quarterfinals against the CBHS A team.
Despite this setback, the B team showed resilience, winning two of their last three games to secure 7th place overall. Remarkably, during the season, they had defeated three of the teams that finished in the tournament's top four. For such a young team, their significant development and improvement were evident. A big thank you goes to coach Justin Randall for his guidance and commitment to the team.
CBHS A Team
The CBHS A team set the benchmark from the outset with their dominant performances. Across their six games, the team scored an incredible 158 goals while conceding just 33. Their fast-paced, attacking style of play was a standout feature and proved too much for their opponents to handle.
Their campaign culminated in a decisive 27-5 victory over Christ’s College in the final, securing the championship title. Individual brilliance was also recognized, with Troy Hansen, Jonah Teokotai, and Cooper Hudson named in the tournament team. Jonah Teokotai was further honored as the tournament MVP, a testament to his outstanding contributions.
Both teams represented CBHS with pride and demonstrated the school’s strong foundation in junior sport. Congratulations to all the players and coaches for an excellent tournament!

Senior Touch | Canterbury Secondary Schools Champs
On Saturday, November 23, the Senior Touch team participated in the Canterbury Secondary Schools Champs. Although the boys' competition had only three teams entered—Shirley Boys’ High School, St. Bede’s College, and CBHS—the event, organized by Touch Canterbury, provided an excellent opportunity for our team to gain valuable game experience.
The format consisted of four round-robin games—two each against Shirley Boys and St. Bede’s—with the top two teams advancing to a final match.
Match Highlights:
Against Shirley Boys’ High School, the CBHS team showcased their skill and composure, securing two well-earned victories (6-3 and 5-3). Shirley’s young team put up a spirited fight, but CBHS’s depth and emerging talent proved decisive.
The games against St. Bede’s College, however, presented a tougher challenge. Despite moments of exceptional touch flow and impressive teamwork, errors in both defence and attack, coupled with intercepts, made the difference. St. Bede’s claimed both matches with scores of 7-3 and 9-4.
Takeaways:
While the results against St. Bede’s didn’t go our way, the tournament was a valuable learning experience, highlighting areas for growth as the team continues to develop. The boys demonstrated resilience and flashes of brilliance, giving plenty of reasons for optimism moving forward.
Congratulations to the team for their efforts, and a big thank you to Touch Canterbury for hosting the event.

Tracey Buchanan Shines at the Pan Pacific World Master Games
CBHS Literacy and Numeracy teacher Tracey Buchanan recently competed at the Pan Pacific World Master Games, an event hosting around 18,000 competitors across more than 40 sports. Tracey and her team participated in the 50+ Women’s Basketball grade, composed of former Canterbury and Otago representative players who had shared the court as teammates and rivals over 30 years ago.
The team played a total of 10 games, including semi-finals and the thrilling final. Despite a couple of opponents defaulting, their journey to the gold medal match showcased their skill, teamwork, and competitive spirit.
In the final, the team faced a dramatic challenge. Down by 6 points with just 13 seconds on the clock, they executed a phenomenal comeback—sinking two free throws, following up with a three-pointer, and setting up a buzzer-beater to clinch the gold medal.
This outstanding achievement reflects Tracey’s dedication and passion for basketball. We are incredibly proud of her and her team for embodying the values of resilience, teamwork, and determination. Congratulations, Tracey, on this fantastic success!
