Update from the Sports Department

Canterbury Secondary Schools Road Race 2025

A stunning afternoon presented itself at North Hagley Park on Tuesday, for the Canterbury Secondary Schools Road Race. It was great to be able to field teams in all three age groups, with all runners producing commendable efforts.

Seniors

We fielded a team of six in the Senior Boys' with a couple of new faces in the mix which was good to see. Individual placings for our team were: Max Aldridge 6th, Mason McLachlan 10th, Henry Sevier 12th, Archie Watson 14th, Jonty Hickman 21st and Numair Malik 25th. There were some good PBs from this group and our 4-man team of Max, Mason, Henry and Archie took out the Senior title, a great effort by these boys.

Juniors

We were also able to field six runners in the Junior race, including a newcomer in Noah Crosson. These boys ran with real credit and a number ran slashing PB's. Isaac Johnston in 5th, headed home Conall Latham 6th, James Stockdale 10th, James Trimboy 16th, Kento Stephenson 18th and Noah Crosson 24th. Consistent results across our first four boys saw them come in 2nd in the 4-man team. Well done to Isaac, Conall, James S and James T.

Year Nines

Our year nines also did a great job in their first Road Race. Eli Dimbleby made great ground on the second lap to finish 14th, heading in Dan Fuchigami 16th, Liam Kobayashi 27th and Ben MacAvoy 28th. These boys finished a very commendable 4th in what was a very competitive year nine field this year.

Our next event is the South Island Cross Country in Timaru on 25 May, followed by the Canterbury Secondary Schools event on May 29th. Thanks to Mr Wood and Mr Drury for supporting the team.

Christchurch Boys High School at National Orienteering Champs and South Island Secondary Schools Orienteering Champs:

With the dust settling on Kaikoura Adventure Race for Liam Kobayashi, he and Hector Symonds headed into the National Orienteering Champs hosted by Peninsula and Plains Orienteering (PAPO) Club in Canterbury over Easter.  Hector also made the trip south for the ANZAC weekend South Island Secondary Schools Orienteering Champs hosted by Dunedin Orienteering Club.

National Orienteering Champs 2025 involved 5 disciplines across 5 days.  A sprint distance in central Christchurch, a middle distance at Waikuku Beach, a long distance at Mt Cass, a relay at Woodend Beach and this year also a knockout sprint at Lincoln and Canterbury University Campuses.  Some fantastic tight technical navigation and great running despite the often, wild wet weather.

South Island Secondary Schools Champs involved just two disciplines.  The sun came out for a sprint distance in Cromwell, a combination of technical and open running in school campuses and parks.  The long distance followed the next day in Alexandra, where participants were treated to some technical navigation through stunning rocky hill country.

Overall an amazing couple of weeks of fantastic racing action.

Well done to Liam and Hector:

CBHS Squash – A Season of Growth and Promise

The 2025 squash season is shaping up to be one of the strongest in Christchurch Boys’ High School’s recent history. With a record-breaking 50+ registrations, enthusiasm for the sport is at an all-time high—more than doubling participation compared to five years ago. This surge in numbers reflects a deepening interest in squash among students, inspired in part by Old Boy and former world number one, Paul Coll.

Last year saw 12 CBHS players qualify for the National Secondary Schools Squash Championships, with most exceeding or matching their seedings. With a more experienced and skillful squad this year, the team has set an ambitious but attainable goal: to finish inside the national top 10.

Standout Performances

Max Dillon-Roberts has had an exceptional season, earning the title of Head Player of the Month for April following a remarkable 34.8% grading improvement. Over the past 12 months, Max has increased his national squash grading by an outstanding 364.9% and is now a B2. His performance at the Oceania Junior Championships, where he won three of his five matches, exceeded expectations and confirmed his rapid development.

Jack Breward delivered a commanding performance at the Canterbury Junior Open, securing victories over both Prasad Prabhu (12/10, 11/6, 11/8) and Paddy Gould (11/9, 11/6, 11/13, 11/7) on his way to the final. There, he faced off against the in-form Dillon-Roberts, who claimed the Division 1 title in straight games (11/2, 11/3, 11/3).

Toby Gibson and William Gallagher continue their steady ascent toward the B2 grade (1600 points), marking them as emerging talent in the national scene. The B2 grade is the fourth-highest tier in the NZ squash system, with A1 representing the elite level.

Competitive Match Highlights

At the Canterbury Junior Age Groups, Year 12 student Prasad Prabhu avenged an earlier five-set loss in the Men’s Autumn Interclub by defeating higher-graded Paddy Gould in four sets (11/13, 11/5, 4/11, 2/11).

Meanwhile, in the Men’s Autumn Interclub, Nicholas Preston and Jeremy Pennell met in a tightly contested five-set thriller. Representing opposing clubs, Preston narrowly edged out Pennell in a match that could have gone either way: 14/16, 15/12, 12/15, 15/13, 14/16.

Lochlan Childs and Maxim Dill-Russell have also enjoyed solid interclub campaigns, each securing consistent wins and demonstrating steady progression in match play.

Basketball - Update

With the first few weeks of basketball now complete, the boys are beginning to find their place in their respective grades. We have five junior teams and two U17 teams competing in the Saturday CBA competition. In addition, our U15A and Senior A teams are representing CBHS in the Grocott and Thompson Trophy competitions held on Tuesday evenings.

Results so far have been mixed. The Thompson Trophy team has faced some of the top basketball schools in the city. Their season opener was a home game against St Andrew’s College, where the boys held strong in a tightly contested first half, backed by a vocal and supportive crowd. Although StAC pulled ahead midway through the second half, our team can be proud of a strong and determined performance. Their next game, an away fixture against Middleton Grange, saw the boys come away with a hard-earned win in another close match.

The Junior A team has come up against some highly skilled and challenging opposition in the Saturday competition, suffering a few heavy defeats. However, the team continues to show resilience and commitment, playing with heart and upholding our Blue and Black values. Encouragingly, they are improving with every game and currently hold a 2–1 record in the Grocott competition.

Our U15B team remains undefeated, impressing their coach with their ability to learn, adapt, and execute on game day. As the season progresses and teams are regraded, there is hope that they will earn a spot in the top section of their grade.

Overall, it has been pleasing to see all of our basketball teams representing CBHS with pride, honour, and commitment, consistently demonstrating good sportsmanship and team spirit.

Winter Sport - off to a good start! Come along to support your mates!

It is incredible to see how many CBHS boys we have engaged in winter sport this season. We have rugby, football, basketball, hockey, badminton and table tennis teams. Boys competing in road cycling, kick boxing, cross country and squash. Coming soon we have snow sports.
