SPORTS NEWS

Cycling:

Oliver Clark has been invited to attend a junior track development trip to Malaysia with Cycling NZ from the 28 April – 7 May 2024. Awesome job from an up-and-coming cyclist!

Golf:

CBHS entered two teams in the Canterbury Secondary Schools Golf Championships played at Mclean’s Island Golf Club. A perfect autumn day greeted nearly 110 players from around the region, competing in both individual and team competitions. The CBHS A team of Rahil Krishna and Will Wright played impressive golf, the highlight being Rahil’s fourth placing in the individual section after shooting a particularly impressive back 9 on his way to a gross score of 76. The B team of Josh Gwatkin, Alex Borcoski and Liam Suddaby also played good golf, around a tight, treelined course.

Rowing – Maadi Cup:

The week started off with a hiss and roar with many crews going straight to A finals. Others went on to race repechages on Tuesday and Wednesday to race their way into the finals. A huge moment that led to a standing ovation upon returning to the accommodation was Matt Dennis winning his heat in the U18 single!

The results from finals were as follows:

  • U18 Pair (A final - 4th)

  • U18 Four (A final - 4th)

  • U18 Eight (A final - 4th)

  • Novice Double (A final - 4th)

  • U17 Eight (A final - 4th)

  • U16 Four (A final – 4th and 8th - only school with 2 crews in the final)

  • U15 Eight (A final - 5th)

  • U15 Four (A final - 4th, B final - 7th)

  • U17 Pair (A final - 5th)

  • U16 Eight (A final - 6th)

  • U18 Quad (B final - 1st)

  • U18 Single (D final - 1st)

  • U17 Quad (B final - 3rd)

Emotions were and still are pretty raw from coming so close to the podium for so many. To come as far as they did, and to have so many boys at the top end of the field, was a real achievement. At our annual dinner with Hamilton Boys’ High School, it was noted that only two schools in the country have a crew in every 8+ A final - CBHS and HBHS.

We are incredibly proud of how these boys held themselves, and how hard they have worked.

Huge congratulations to the below boys who received the news that they have been selected for representative team trials:

U19 World Championships trial

  • Harry Galvan

U18 South Island Team trial

  • Ben Rowe

  • Ollie Browning

  • Danny Webb

  • Will Harrington

Mountain Biking SISS at Coronet Peak:

Great racing on Friday from our downhill riders. A big day for mechanic Mr Dunnett and his able assistant, Mr Jones, with a constant run of bikes in the stand, awesome work. Results wise our 2 kayakers made the massive 10 hour trip from Murchison and were rewarded with medals, Sam Dunnett, gold in U17 Downhill and Sam Hewitt silver in U20 boys. These 2 guys are superstars in mountain biking at school, big ups to them for their commitment and passion for the sport. Everyone gave their best and most riders improved their seeding run time.

Last day of SISS saw all the boys head out to complete 4 stages for their Enduro. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves riding as a team in their age groups. Results saw the two Sam's again on the podium, reversing results from Friday, with Sam Hewitt taking gold in U20's and Sam Dunnett taking silver in U17 boys. An outstanding ride over the 4 stages bringing silver for Xandy Haycock in U16 boys. An enjoyable trip with the team coming away with more experience banked for future events.

For those interested the boys have started well and produced some excellent results. Today was cross country and the Davies brothers did a number on their opposition. Ben winning gold in U14 and Josh winning gold in U17 boys, with Andre Free coming in for bronze in the U17's. Following this the boys raced in the relay with U20 boys of Josh Davies, Andre Free and Carter Jones coming away with a close second and silver medal. In the U16 boys relay Xandy Haycock, Connor Gilmore and Ben Davies took out the bronze. The team heads into Downhill racing tomorrow. The boys have been great supporting their teammates.

Thanks to Mr Dunnett, Mr McNaughton and Mr Ralston for your support for the boys it does not go unnoticed.

Waterpolo:

The Senior A and B water polo teams participated in the South Island Secondary Schools Water Polo Tournament held here in Christchurch.

The Senior A team:

The team finished second in the tournament losing a tight final to St Bede’s 7-6. The team were up 6-4 with 2 ½ minutes on the clock. Unfortunately, a couple of errors from school led to St Bede’s scoring the last 3 goals and taking the title.

vs Southland Boys' High School - 17-2 win

vs Burnside High School - 15-3 win

vs CBHS Senior B - 17-2 win

vs St Andrews College - 11-5 win

vs Christ’s College - 24-4 win

Semi Final vs Marlborough win - 13-3

The Senior B team:

Our B team is a young team with majority of the team being Year 11, 10 and 9 students and are playing as one of only two “B” teams at the tournament.

They had a tough start playing 5 pool games, with 4 losses and 1 draw. This saw us ending 6th in our group and playing for 7th to 11th.

Senior B Grade

Our senior Blue waterpolo team won the B grade competition last night at QEII. After finishing pool play unbeaten, they came up against SBHS in the final. After taking an early lead SBHS fought back to tie up the score 6-6. Boys’ High then had several great opportunities to finish the game off but kept missing the final shot. Finally, we put one away and took the final out 7-6.

Kī-o-rahi:

CBHS had 2 Kī-o-rahi teams combined with Christchurch Girls’ High School competing in the Waitaha Kī-o-rahi Regional Competition.

A’s:

  • Had a strong start with strong wins against Riccarton 1 and Lincoln 2.

  • The boys saw their first loss in a close game against Te Puna Wai o Waipapa.

  • This meant the team had qualified for the quarterfinals against Whakapūmau 1. After a tight start, the team dug deep and then ran away with the game which resulted in a Top 4 placing - which locks in this team in for Kī-o-rahi nationals.

  • The boys then played against Te Puna Wai o Waipapa for a rematch, and the excitement of qualifying had burned all the energy as Te Puna Wai o Waipapa ran away with the game.

  • Standouts were Matt Draper, Teokotai Mataiti, and Jai Tufuga.

B’s:

  • With many students who had recently picked up Kī-o-rahi, they turned up and showed great development.

  • Unfortunately, it took till the second game for the team to score a point, but they continued to play until the final whistle.

  • Playing off against Lincoln 2 for 2nd to last and last, the team switched on and won 14-6.

  • Standouts were Taylor Scott, Izzy Tufuga and Liam Newfield

Volleyball:

CBHS had 2 teams competing in the South Island Satellite Cup, this tournament was huge for our teams development.

A’s:

Beat Burnside in the 5/6 playoff 3-1 to come fifth overall. Victory Isaako and Larson O'Callaghan played their final tournament games for CBHS after being stalwarts in the team for a few years.

We had a young A team this year (with only 2 Year 13s), this will develop to a strong team in 2024/25 with an aim of going to nationals.

B’s:

Losses to Hornby A and Te Aratai A in the semis and 3rd final places them in 4th in Division 2. A gallant effort and the Year 10/11 boys in the team really came a long way.

Cricket:
