'School' Back on Top of Crusaders Region

Matt Parr —

On Saturday 20th, the 1st XV took out the UC Championship with a one point victory over Shirley Boys' High School.

In a thrilling match, CBHS held on for the last 9 minutes to claim their first title since 2014.

The win was the ultimate end to a strong season for the side coached by staff members Danny Porte, Rob Smith and managed by Mike Drury.

With only four returning players from last season's 1st XV it was always going to be a challenge to win the 2016 UC Championship. Smith puts the success down to simple hard work and credits the boys attitude, commitment and willingness to learn.

"It has been really enjoyable watching this team develop over the winter months, from our first round loss to Marlborough College to now having the opportunity to represent the school on the National stage is a great reward and well deserved" - Smith.

The win now means the 1st XV take on Highlanders Region Champions, Southland Boys' at Straven Road in a National Top 8 clash with winner advancing to the National Top 4 competition in Auckland. Kick off at 1:00pm Saturday 27 August.
