Water Polo
For the first time CBHS water polo were able to enter two teams into the New Zealand National Championships, having the Senior A team playing in Division 1 and the Senior B team in Division 2.
With two young inexperienced teams we had to dig deep against some of the North Island powerhouses of water polo. While we didn’t get the final placings we were hoping for, both of our teams learned a lot from the tournament and we can use this experience to build for the future.
A special mention to our Year 13s who played in their last games for CBHS at this tournament.
Senior B water polo
Senior B water polo travelled away to Hamilton to compete in the NZ Secondary School B Nationals. A young team, this competition was all about experience and being able to step up against North Island teams. With one Year 9, four Year 10’s and four Year 11 players in the team we knew this was going to be hard. Drawn in a tough pool the team struggled with the physicality of the larger teams.
Day one started with a loss to Western Springs Senior A 14-2. This was followed by a tough loss to a Waikato combined team. After giving up a five goal start the team battled back to go down by two goals showing that they can play. Day 2 saw similar results. Again, the team gave up 4-nil leads and then decided to battle back before going down narrowly. The team continued to learn and improve. Our final pool game, although a loss, saw us play some really good water polo and push the second ranked team hard.
Our final two games saw the team put everything together finishing with 10-0 and 11-1 wins.
Thanks to Ben Bone for coaching the team, Taryn Randal for managing and Melinda Dunstan for all her work looking after all of us.
Hockey
During the school holidays, a group of boys travelled to Timaru to take part in the annual Canzac Hockey Tournament. The tournament was an eventful experience for the 1st XI players from CBHS. With 7 new boys joining the squad, there was a lot of talent on display. Their results were impressive:
- Win over St Bedes 3-1: A solid start to the tournament with a convincing victory over St Bedes.
- Draw to Timaru Boys 3-3: A closely contested match against the hosts, Timaru Boys', resulting in a draw.
- Win over Shirley Boys 7-1: A dominant performance against Shirley Boys', showcasing the team's strength and skill.
- Narrow loss to College in the final quarter of the game: Despite the loss, the team put up a good fight against College, showing determination and resilience until the end.
Overall, the CBHS men performed admirably throughout the tournament, demonstrating their potential for the upcoming season. The experience gained from playing in such competitive matches will undoubtedly benefit them in their future games.
Rugby
The CBHS Development Tour was quite an experience for the 26 boys. Facing tough opponents Southport School and Nudgee College has provided valuable lessons and challenges for the squad.
The team had breakfast with Wallaby, James O'Connor, which was an incredible opportunity for the boys to gain insights from such an accomplished rugby player. Despite the result against Nudgee College, it's evident that the squad gave it their all, and the match served as an important preparation for the upcoming season.
The victory against Brisbane Boys' College 1st XV in the final game was a satisfying conclusion to the tour, especially in such a tightly contested match. The team were incredibly supported by the coaching staff, management, and the parent support group, emphasising the strong sense of community within the CBHS rugby programme.
Overall, the tour was not just about rugby development but also about building camaraderie and creating lasting memories for everyone involved.
