Altiora Peto Winner 2025
Bruce Ullrich - OBE
Message from the Senior Monitor - Ben Shearer
Today we have the privilege of welcoming back to Christchurch Boys’ High School one of our most accomplished Old Boys; a man whose life’s work embodies our four school values: Commitment, Bravery, Honour, and Service.
Bruce Ullrich attended CBHS in the 1950s, where he was a school monitor, first XI cricket captain, and a member of the 1st XV. From his early days here, Bruce demonstrated the commitment that would define his life – not just in sport, but in business, education, and community leadership.
After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant and completing an MBA, Bruce built a distinguished business career in New Zealand and overseas. He served on multiple boards, mentored business leaders, and helped grow New Zealand’s presence in international trade. His commitment to excellence never wavered.
Bruce also demonstrated great bravery – not on a battlefield, but in the arenas of global sport and international events. As Vice-Chairman of the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, he helped deliver an event that drew worldwide recognition and commendation. Later, as Chef de Mission for New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth teams in the 1980s, he led athletes on the world stage, often under intense pressure, bringing home record medal hauls.
The value of honour runs through Bruce’s work. Whether representing New Zealand overseas, leading complex international negotiations, or preserving Christchurch heritage, he has acted with integrity and pride in his roots. He served on the Boys’ High Board for a decade, helping save the main block from demolition – ensuring future generations, such as yourselves, could learn in the same place he did.
Finally, Bruce’s demonstration of service is remarkable. Bruce has given over 30% of his time since the 1970s to ‘pro bono’ work for the community and country. From Rotary humanitarian projects to promoting New Zealand in China to founding the National Sports Museum, his legacy of service is extraordinary.
Bruce Ullrich is a man who has carried the values of CBHS into every area of life. Today, we honour him as the recipient of the Altiora Peto Medal. We thank him for showing us that Commitment, Bravery, Honour, and Service are not just words on our wall, but principles to live by.
It is now both my honour and pleasure to invite old boy president Dave Hewitt to present the Altiora Peto Medal to our recipient for 2025. Please join me in welcoming Bruce Ullrich back to Christchurch Boys’ High School.
