Teaching and Learning

CBHS —

The heart of CBHS curriculum lies at the intersection of our academic, sporting and cultural programmes that promote the personal, moral and intellectual growth of every boy.

CBHS proudly values high academic achievement while also recognising the importance of creating well-rounded young men able to make a positive contribution to both New Zealand society and our global society.

The CBHS curriculum encompasses traditional academic subjects as well as opportunities to learn and grow beyond the walls of the classroom while incorporating modern technologies. We aim to ensure that young people are prepared with the capacity to think independently, solve problems, develop their humanity, and thrive in a rapidly changing society. The School’s curriculum is responsive to the needs and interests of students providing a broad range of learning opportunities within and beyond the School. This includes opportunities and pathways for students to expand their studies beyond the senior school through links to the University of Canterbury (for accelerated academic opportunities). The Education Review Office has recently noted that our school culture has the needs and aspirations of students at its heart and that we have an environment that is conducive to student learning and wellbeing through ongoing reinforcement of clear and consistent expectations.

We encourage our teachers to build positive relationships with their students, to know the academic and social needs of their students, and to show that they care about the personal and collective successes of their students.

Individual students’ achievement and progress is tracked and monitored closely by teachers, and this helps to inform the different approaches they use to engage students in their learning.

Whilst we value academic attainment, beyond the subject content of our curriculum we also believe that giving our students a strong work ethic, a sense of moral purpose and decency, and an unwavering sense of belonging are the foundations of our school community.
