Summer Exchanges

Glenn Davis —

Over the period 25 – 27 February and 4 – 6 March Christchurch Boys' High School hosted Auckland Grammar and Westlake Boys' High School for the annual inter-school exchange.

These traditional fixtures are a highlight of the school calendar and it allows the boys involved to test themselves against competition that they would not usually encounter. Cricket, golf and tennis are played during both exchanges.

Auckland Grammar 25 – 27 February

Grammar proved to be worthy opposition across all codes but good wins by the golf and tennis teams awarding the exchange 2-1 to CBHS. The 1st XI did not have one of their best matches, however, losing outright with 5 mins remaining in the match on day 3. A fantastic 170* by Ollie White, who is the son of the NZ Cricket CEO David White, took the game away from CBHS on the first innings and by trailing it meant that the 1st XI was always in catch-up mode. Grammar set CBHS an unrealistic 2nd innings chase and the boys just failed to hang on for a draw. The Grammar boys were obviously delighted to have beaten the reigning New Zealand champions.

The golf team had a good result defeating Grammar over two days at the Russley and Shirley golf courses. The CBHS tennis team held on to beat Grammar 11 - 10 in a close tie.

Westlake Boys' High School 4 – 6 March

Westlake arrived at CBHS with tennis, golf and a 1st XI and Colts cricket team. Former Zimbabwean cricket international Paul Strang is now leading Westlake's sports programme and so certainly the cricket boys thought they might be in for a tough challenge

Day three was unfortunately punctuated by rain and this effected the 1st XI cricket result, with Westlake being 66 – 4 chasing 188 to win when play was suspended due to the weather. The Colts XI had two good wins in a T20 match (CBHS 158 vs WBHS 98) and a 50 over game (CBHS 220/9 vs WBHS 181). Day 3’s 50 over game was not completed due to rain.

Golf and tennis had successful ties beating Westlake 6 and ½ to 3 and ½, and 14 matches to 7 respectively. Matches were played at the Clearwater, Russley and Shirley golf courses, and at the Te Kura and Wilding Park tennis venues.
