1st XV Fall Just Short in South Island Final
After their Miles Toyota Final victory the week prior, the CBHS 1st XV travelled to Invercargill to face Southland Boys’ High School in the South Island Boys’ Final at Les George Oval.
A strong start saw CBHS take a 12–3 lead through tries to Hanroux Wessels and Delahoia Te-Pakeke Kakoi, but Southland hit back to lead 13–12 at halftime.
The hosts came out firing in the second spell, stretching their advantage to 25–12 before CBHS mounted a spirited comeback with tries to Sione Telefoni and Dougal Grant, closing the gap to 22–25.
A late Southland try extended the margin to 32–22, but CBHS responded again as Hiro Fuchigami crossed under the posts, converted by Cam Jones, narrowing it to 29–32. In a thrilling finish, CBHS fought through 26 attacking phases in Southland’s half before a turnover ended the match.
Despite the narrow defeat, the boys showed immense heart and determination, bringing an unbeaten season to a close in dramatic fashion.
A huge thank you goes out to all parents, whānau, and supporters who backed the team throughout a memorable year.
Altiora Peto.

Bronze for CBHS Pair at Pickleball Tournament
Congratulations to Zac Hannah and Max Pont, who represented CBHS over the weekend at a local pickleball tournament and came away with a bronze medal in the U18 section.
Pickleball is a fast-growing sport, and both boys are passionate players who would love to see it introduced at CBHS. Their success highlights not only their own dedication but also the exciting opportunities this sport could bring to our school community.
Well done, Zac and Max, this is a fantastic effort that makes the school proud!

Winter Tournament Week | Junior Basketball – South Island B Grade Tournament
Our junior boys were eager to make their mark at the South Island Junior Tournament. With a 1st or 2nd placing in pool play required to progress to the playoffs, CBHS got off to a strong start with a commanding 115–37 win over Westland.
The second pool match against Rolleston proved to be a rollercoaster. Some crucial errors in execution and a lack of cohesion at key moments saw the boys narrowly fall 68–71. Determined to bounce back, the team delivered a resounding 116–55 victory over Marlborough, securing 2nd place in the pool and a crossover against familiar rivals Christ’s College.
Having lost twice to Christ’s in our local competition during the season, the boys were fired up for redemption when it mattered most. In what was their best performance of the season, they delivered a clinical, final-like display, storming to an emphatic 84–49 win.
That victory set up a semifinal against a burly and skilful John McGlashen side, who would go on to win the tournament. Despite the challenge, the boys competed with heart and refused to back down. The final two games were nail-biters, with the lead changing hands repeatedly. A 72–74 loss to Nayland on a highly contentious buzzer-beater — which many felt should have sent the game to overtime — left the boys disappointed but determined. In their final match, against Nelson B for 7th and 8th place, CBHS again fought to the end. Requiring a three-pointer in the final seconds to force overtime, the shot went up under pressure but fell just short.
CBHS ultimately finished 8th out of 16 teams. While the boys were gutted not to make the top four, the growth in both team chemistry and individual skills over the course of the season has been immense. The win over Christ’s was certainly a highlight and a testament to the group’s potential.
A huge thank you to the coaching staff, team management, our loyal supporters on the sideline, and the individual sponsors who made this season possible. The future looks bright for this talented group of players, and we look forward to watching them continue to develop in the years ahead.
Winter Tournament Week | Senior Basketball – South Island Qualifying Tournament
The Senior Basketball team competed in the South Island Qualifying Tournament, facing a tough pool that included three highly ranked teams – Christ’s College, Otago Boys’ and Cashmere – along with familiar rivals Lincoln High and the unfamiliar Waitaki Boys’. With the goal of securing a middle bracket finish (9th–16th), the boys knew they needed to play exceptionally well.
Strong starts in the opening games boosted confidence, particularly in the highly anticipated clash with Lincoln High. Having met twice during the regular season with one win apiece, this was always going to be a battle. The boys rose to the occasion, sealing a hard-fought 97–83 victory. The momentum carried into the next day, with a confident 102–84 win over Waitaki, securing our spot in the 9th–16th bracket and achieving the team’s first goal.
The crossover match against a strong and determined St Thomas’ side proved a real test. The boys competed hard throughout but couldn’t quite find the edge, showing plenty of grit and determination in the contest. The final two games, against John McGlashen and Southland, were also tightly fought, with momentum shifting quarter by quarter. However, fatigue at crucial moments led to errors and missed opportunities, and both games slipped away.
CBHS ultimately finished 16th out of 24 teams – a result to be proud of, particularly as it placed us ahead of several Canterbury schools from the local Thompson Trophy competition. The tournament also marked the final appearance for our Year 13 players, and we thank them for their commitment and contribution over the years. We wish them every success in their future basketball journeys.
A huge thank you goes to Coach Varga, Coach Howison, and Team Manager Sarah for their time, guidance, and dedication throughout the season.
Winter Tournament Week | 1st XI Hockey - Rankin Cup
The 1st XI Hockey team had a fantastic week in Auckland. The boys knew going into the tournament that it would be tough and demand their very best hockey. Unfortunately, an unlucky crossover draw and a few soft goals led to some disappointing losses, but the team showed great resilience, lifted each other up, and finished strongly with two impressive wins. A huge thank you to our coaches, Logan and Clayton, for bringing a fresh group together and helping them play quality hockey.
We will certainly miss our Year 13s and the skill, leadership, and synergy they have brought to the team. A special shout-out goes to Ollie Munt, who celebrated his 100th game during the tournament. We will miss his sharp dribbling skills, strong game sense, and his leadership both on and off the turf.
Message from Danielle Whitehead - Manager 1st XI: "As manager, I couldn’t be prouder of the boys for consistently displaying the blue and black values throughout the week. They are an outstanding group of young men, and I am excited to see them continue to grow together into skilled and successful players."
Winter Tournament Week | U15A Rugby - National Invitational Tournament
The U15 National Rugby Tournament, hosted by Wesley College in Pukekohe, Auckland, was a showcase of grit, skill, and sportsmanship. Wesley College set the tone with a powerful Mihi Whakatau, reminding all teams of the legacy of champions like Jonah Lomu and Steven Donald who once graced their fields.
Over the first two days, Christchurch Boys’ High School (CBHS) faced Otago Boys’, Wellington College, and Rotorua Boys’. With a rock-solid defence, CBHS conceded only two tries across all three matches, securing convincing wins: 26–7, 38–0, and 20–5. These results placed them at the top of their pool and into a Quarter Final clash with Westlake Boys’ High School.
In a rematch of last year’s fixture, CBHS executed a composed game plan, using pace and tactical kicking to pressure Westlake’s backline. A late try from Westlake wasn’t enough, and CBHS advanced with a 15–7 win.
The Semi-Final against Napier Boys’ High School was a test of heart and resilience. Despite Napier’s physical advantage, CBHS countered with brilliant scramble defence and sharp counter-attacks, earning a 22–5 victory and a spot in the Final.
Facing Tauranga Boys’ College in a repeat of the 2024 final, CBHS started strong with dominant scrummaging. However, shifting winds in the second half favoured Tauranga, who pulled ahead to win 24–7. Despite the loss, the CBHS squad showed immense growth, unity, and character throughout the tournament.
The coaching and management team are incredibly proud of the boys’ achievements and the way they represented their school with pride and determination.
Winter Tournament Week | 1st XI Football
The 1st XI moved through pool play and the Round of 16 confidently, with strong performances against Bethlehem College, Rongotai College, Taupo-nui-a-tia, and Horowhenua College, highlighted by a hat-trick from Joel Newsome. The first significant challenge came in the quarter final against Wellington College Colts, where the team was down 2-0 at half-time. Demonstrating determination and teamwork, they staged a remarkable comeback to win 3-2 in extra time, with Captain Will Mackay scoring the decisive goal.
In the semi-final, the team faced Hutt Valley High School, a familiar opponent from the 2024 Jim Wishart tournament final. Once again, they emerged victorious, securing their place in the final.
The final was against tournament hosts Rongotai College, whom they had already faced in pool play. Despite the intense atmosphere created by Rongotai's student supporters, the 1st XI prevailed with a hard-fought 1-0 victory, clinching the NZSS Trident Tournament for 2025. Throughout the week, the team performed exceptionally well, with Abdifatah Sheikh being named the Most Valuable Player for his outstanding contributions.
