Careers Department Update

There is so much happening within the Careers Department at the moment that we have had decided to send out a seperate email to make sure you all see it. A number of opportunities coming up this week for students so be sure to take a look.

NCEA Level 2 grades

A reminder to the Year 12 students that the grades they achieve this year (2016) are used for University Hall/College selection and the awarding of scholarships in 2017 for their first year of tertiary study in 2018. The University of Auckland bases its scholarship selection on Level 2 academic results and then on other aspects of school life - sport, culture and leadership.

Year 13 students considering university

University Entrance is required to enter a degree level course. This consists of achieving the following.

  • Attain NCEA Level 3 by achieving 14 credits minimum at Level 3 in each of three subjects from the approved list of subjects.
  • Achieve UE numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 and above from specific achievement standards or three specific numeracy unit standards.
  • Achieve UE literacy - 10 credits (5 in reading and five in writing) at Level 2 and above from specific standards.

Please note if you are wishing to keep your options open for studying Engineering it is recommended that you study Calculus, Physics, Chemistry. For more specific information please see Mr Webster.

Education USA visit - Tuesday 1st March, 11:00am

Dr Aime Black, the Wellington-based EducationUSA Advisor, will be giving a presentation in C5 11am Tuesday 1st March. She can answer questions as well as advise on the admissions process. Parents are welcome to attend this presentation.

University Presentation - Wednesday 2nd March, 8:30am

Yr11 and Yr12 Students considering going to university after leaving school please meet in the Big Room at 8:30am . This is not university specific and will cover all aspects to consider when deciding whether or not university is the right path for you. Parents are welcome to attend this presentation.

Otago University presentation - Wednesday 9th March, 8:35am

Students considering studying at Otago University please meet in C5 at 8:35am on Wednesday 9th March to hear a presentation by Otago Liaison staff.

CPIT presentation - Wednesday 16th March, 8:35am

Students considering studying at CPIT please meet in C5 at 8:35am on Wednesday 16th March to hear a presentation by CPIT Liaison staff.

Lincoln University presentation - Wednesday 30th March, 8:35am

Students considering studying at Lincoln University please meet in C5 at 8:35am on Wednesday 30th March to hear a presentation by Lincoln Liaison staff.

University of Canterbury Year 12 Discovery Day – Tuesday 12th April

This will be a fantastic opportunity for Yr12 students to attend the University of Canterbury and experience university life for a day. Hear from faculty staff specific information relating to your area of interest. More information to follow.

Otago Tertiary Study Open Day - 9th May

This is on the second Monday of Term 2. Each year a group of 30+ Yr13 students make the trip to Dunedin by bus. We leave midday on Sunday and return 8pm ish Monday. We stay at Manor House Backpackers. We currently have 10 places still available. Please see Mrs Mears in the Careers Office for an application form.

Defence Careers Experience - 4th-6th July

Defence Expo will be held from 04 - 06 July 2016 will be held at the Air Force Museum in Wigram, Christchurch. There are over 100 roles across the New Zealand Defence Force, many of which are unknown to candidates. The expo will be a hands on, interactive expo showcasing what the NZDF has to offer.

Defence Careers Experience (DCE) - 26th–30th September

From NZDF: We’re pleased to let you know that we will be running a Defence Careers Experience in the second half in 2016. This is a five day residential experience held at Burnham Military Camp for Secondary School Students that are interested in a career in the Navy, Army or Air Force. This will be held from 26 - 30 September. We’re looking for smart, active and team minded students who are interested in joining the NZDF once they leave school. This is ideally suited for Y12 students, but we’ll also consider Y11 or Y13 students. The DCE will focus largely on soldier, sailor, airmen and airwomen roles. They include electronic, mechanical, technical and other hands on roles in the NZDF! Applications Close – Thursday 12 August at 4pm. Successful candidates will be advised no later than 2 September. Maori Education Trust Secondary Scholarships

The Maori Education Trust scholarship programme comprises a range of scholarships for Maori secondary and tertiary students. The purpose of the programme is to provide support for Maori students to pursue and achieve success in programmes of study and training. For more information go to www.maorieducation.org.nz.
