Adams House
Adams House is the Boarding facility for CBHS. The hostel is situated just five minutes walk from the School. The grounds are extensive and include modern amenities for our boarders.
Adams House is a central part of Christchurch Boys’ High School and provides a supportive, structured boarding environment for boys from across the South Island and beyond.
For many boys, it becomes a genuine home away from home. There is a strong sense of connection within the hostel, with boys forming close relationships with staff and with each other. The daily presence of the Head of House and staff means boys are well known, well supported, and part of a community where people look out for one another.
There is a clear culture of care within Adams House. Boys speak positively about the support they receive and the way they are included. Senior boys take responsibility for younger boys, and there is a strong sense that Adams House operates as one community rather than separate groups.
Alongside this, expectations are clear. Boys understand routines, behaviour standards, and safety processes, and these are consistently reinforced. This creates an environment that is both welcoming and well-ordered, where boys know where they stand.
Recent external feedback from ERO highlighted this balance. Reviewers noted the strong relationships between boys and staff, the openness of leadership, and the confidence boys have in the systems that support them. Boys demonstrated a strong sense of responsibility for each other.
Systems and structures support the day-to-day running of the hostel, allowing staff to focus on what matters most, the wellbeing and development of each boy.
Adams House reflects the wider values of CBHS. It is a place where boys are supported, challenged, and expected to contribute, and where they develop the independence and character needed beyond school.
