Debra Dawson - This is me
Across School Leader - Science
I have been teaching for the past 14 years after a mid-life decision to retrain. This was prompted by moving cities and being invited into the new entrant room by my sons’ teacher. After experiencing the wonder of young, curious minds soaking up science learning my decision was made. This was a stark contrast to working as a scientist both in NZ and the USA, and as a university lecturer in Food Technology Faculty at Massey University.
I am passionate about the role that education can have in changing lives, opening doors and providing opportunities to students regardless of what is going on in their lives outside of school. School should be a safe place where everyone has the right to receive an education and be treated as an individual with their individual needs being respected and met.
It is an absolute privilege to currently hold an across-school lead role and have the opportunity to interact with the schools in the Kahui Ako and work with such a passionate group of across-school teachers. My previous experience in science education and research rich base for my Kahui Ako role. I believe science teaching should be through authentic experiences for learners. My practice relies heavily on data obtained both from both formative and summative student information.
In my spare time I will be in the garden.
