WELLBEING(HAUORA) AND TRANSITIONS

Megan Martin —

What is wellbeing?

A simple definition of wellbeing is "feeling good and functioning well". Danielle Marston and Megan Martin (Across School Teachers) work with our Kāhui Ako community on supporting the development of wellbeing and transitions throughout our schools. This work is based around Mason Durie's Te Whare Tapa Wha model of wellbeing which is embedded in the Health and Physical Education New Zealand Curriculum. Wellbeing is like a whare (house) that has four sides: physical (taha tinana), mental/emotional (taha hinengaro), social (whanau) and spiritual (taha wairua). Each side is needed for the house to be strong. In other words your mind, body, soul and relationships are the foundation for overall wellness.
