SOLO Taxonomy

Angela Gilligan & Karen Burt —

At SJS Papanui we are focusing on quality teaching and learning. Part of this is implementing SOLO Taxonomy school-wide.

At St Joseph’s we are proud of the way we have integrated our S.O.LO. Taxonomy into Discovery Learning. Discovery Learning provides ‘hands on’ experiences and opportunities for our Year 0-4 learners. Our focus is based on learner needs and may target a specific aspect of one of the Key Competencies or a Gospel Value.

S.O.L.O. is used throughout our Discovery Learning to promote deep thinking and visible learning. Some of our learners plan and lead activities. At the end of the sessions we reflect and evaluate on what we have done and what we have learned according to our S.O.L.O. rubrics. Learners provide evidence to justify why they are working at the stage they are. We have found that this approach is useful for understanding learners thinking, supporting them to progress and for planning and assessment.
