Building Emotional Regulation for Better Learning - Komodo Wellbeing

Clara Fleming —

Last week, Marian College hosted an inspiring wellbeing workshop in partnership with Komodo Wellbeing, a platform designed to help schools proactively monitor and improve student wellbeing.

The workshop began with a powerful question: If you could give your students one skill, what would it be? Responses included empathy, resilience and kindness. The conversation quickly turned to the foundation behind these traits: emotional regulation. Without the ability to recognise and manage their emotions, students struggle to build the empathy, resilience and focus they need to thrive.

Why Emotional Regulation Matters

Drawing from neuroscience, the Komodo team explained that emotional regulation is not a fixed personality trait, but a skill that can be taught and developed. It supports everything from cognitive control and decision-making to goal-setting and social interaction. When students can regulate their emotions, they are more open to connection, curiosity and learning.

The workshop explored practical tools and strategies educators can use, such as:

  • Co-regulation: guiding students back to emotional balance through adult support.

  • The ‘Window of Tolerance’: helping students recognise when they are calm, hyper-aroused or shut down, and teaching strategies to return to a balanced state.

  • The ‘Regulate, Relate, Reason’ model: supporting the brain from the bottom up, first calming the body, then connecting emotionally and finally moving into problem-solving.

Why Komodo Works for Schools

Komodo Wellbeing’s platform allows schools to track student wellbeing in real time, identify trends, and respond proactively. Rather than waiting for challenges to escalate, staff can offer targeted support when it is needed most. This approach not only benefits students but also strengthens the overall school culture.

By combining data-driven insights with evidence-based practices for emotional regulation, Komodo is helping schools create safe, connected environments where every student has the opportunity to thrive. Marian College’s journey highlights the positive impact this approach can have for a school community.
