Innovative Young Minds
Innovative Young Minds (IYM) was established to inspire more young women to pursue study and careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and high-tech manufacturing, otherwise known as the STEMM sector.
Innovative Young Minds offers female students in Years 11 and 12 the opportunity to visit science and technology companies, research organisations, and tertiary institutions in the Wellington region. The week-long, residential programme includes hands-on activities and inspiring speakers. It exposes participants to extraordinary female mentors, businesses and cutting-edge technology being developed in the region. Rotary Hutt City and Hutt City Council co-organise and fund the programme.
As a result of the pandemic, the six-day course moved online and three of our Year 12 students – Emma Thomsen, Ileana Ocampo and Courtney Green completed the course during the holidays. They heard from a vast range of presenters - Scientists, Engineers, Technologists, Medical Doctors and also covered problem solving, communication, teamwork and leadership. In the final days they were set with a group COVID related problem solving task. Groups comprised of students from throughout the country.
While perhaps lacking the 'hands on' and residential experience they were delighted that they had the opportunity. It was super experience to be exposed to professionals in the STEMM sector throughout the country.
Emma, Ileana and Courtney are grateful to the organisers and the Waipukurau Rotary Club for their sponsorship.
