Menstruation - Year 5 & 6 Girls

Elly Warnock —

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As your child approaches puberty, they will begin to experience many physical and emotional changes including, for our girls, the start of their period. We usually have a conversation with our Year 6 girls towards the middle of the year to provide them with age-appropriate information in a supportive and comfortable environment. Over the past several years, we have noticed that for some of our girls, their period is starting quite young, so we would like to have this conversation soon and extend this to include our Year 5 girls too.

Our discussion will be factual and respectful, and we will cover the following topics:

  • What menstruation is: A simple explanation of the menstrual cycle.

  • Physical changes: What to expect when their bodies begin to change.

  • Products: A discussion around the different menstrual products available.

  • Emotional well-being: The importance of self-care and open communication during this time.

Our conversation will take place in a private, girls-only session to ensure everyone feels safe and able to ask questions. I want to reassure you that this is not a one-time talk; we will be available to answer any questions the girls have as they navigate this new stage of life.

We know that you may have already talked to your child about menstruation or may like to do this in your own way. If you do not wish your child to be part of the discussion, we totally respect your decision -  please just return the slip below so we know.

We will be having this chat on Wednesday 25th February.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Ngā mihi nui
