Celebrating Philippines Independence Day at Our School

Brendon Wallace —

This week, our school came together to mark a very special occasion.

Last week, our school came together to mark a very special occasion — Philippines Independence Day, a day that holds deep meaning for our Filipino students, staff, and whānau. In the quad, we celebrated the rich culture, history, and identity of the Philippines with aroha and respect.

The event began with a warm welcome and a short speech from Mr Davis, who acknowledged the importance of honouring the diverse cultures that make up our school community. He spoke about the value of inclusion and how celebrating national days like this helps us grow our understanding of one another, while strengthening the sense of belonging we strive to foster for every student and staff member.

Mrs Butcon shared what Independence Day means to her and the Filipino community. She spoke with pride about the history of the Philippines’ journey to independence and how the spirit of resilience and community continues to define the Filipino people today. Her words reminded us all of the importance of remembering where we come from and standing tall in our identities.

The Philippine flag was then raised as the national anthem, Lupang Hinirang, was played. Students and staff stood quietly and respectfully, many placing their hands over their hearts. It was a moment of genuine pride and reflection.

Events like this are an important reminder of who we are as a school — a diverse, inclusive, and respectful community where everyone is valued. We learn so much when we take the time to celebrate and understand each other’s cultures. As one student said afterwards, “It made me feel really proud to be Filipino, and really proud to be part of this school.”

A huge thank you to everyone who helped bring this event to life — especially our Filipino students, staff, and families. It was a celebration of independence, yes — but also of unity, pride, and shared identity. Maraming salamat po — thank you very much!
