Invercargill Debating Showdown
On an early brisk morning of March 16th, Central Southland College’s debating squad engages in a fierce tournament challenging their skills against formidable adversaries from high schools across the Southland region.
Jerry Sun, Frinz Catli, Isabella Anderson, Alex Brinkworth, and George Yuen, a fearless ensemble, stood in unwavering opposition to three formidable adversaries: Wakatipu High School, James Hargest College 6, and Mt Aspiring College. Despite the stiff competition, they emerged triumphant in one of the rounds.
As the tournament progressed, each round unveiled new and diverse motions, unravelling the competition in the following manner:
Round One:
Motion: “This house regrets the existence of Valentine's Day”
Affirming: Wakatipu High School
Negating: Central Southland College
Results: Affirming
Round Two:
Motion: “This House Would ban schools and universities from awarding sports
scholarships to students.”
Affirming: Central Southland College
Negating: James Hargest 6
Results: Affirming
Round Three:
Motion: “This House Believes that private charities should focus on reducing global poverty over climate change.”
Affirming: Central Southland College
Negating: Mt Aspiring College
Results: Negating
With demanding motions in play, CSC emerged victorious in round two against James Hargest 6. This tournament wasn't just a test of their skills but also an opportunity to forge lasting connections and experience new techniques. Already anticipating what motions of next year's competition might bring forward. For now, they are recruiting and encouraging more students to partake in debating.
