Junior Netball Teams take on the South Island.

Andrea Beggs - July 11, 2024

The Year 9 and 10 teams had a great week at the South Island Junior Netball Tournament in Christchurch during the first week of the school holidays.

The South Island Junior Netball Tournament is alway a school highlight for our Yr 9 and 10 girls. They play netball during the season for their local clubs and come together in term two to trial and train for the tournament in the July holidays. This involves only 10 trainings and a one day tournament before they head to Christchurch to compete in the South Island Secondary Schools Junior Netball Tournament. The little time they have to play together never seems to be a disadvantage, if anything, the girls are more determined to do well and they enjoy the limited time they have, to be able to play with their school mates.

This year was no different - the Yr 9's were hit with injuries leading up to tournament but to their credit they dig deep and played extremely well for their first big tournament as a CSC team. With 32 teams in their grade, the goal was to make the top 16, which they did by beating Otago Girls High School and Craighead Diocesan. They then went into another pool with St Andrew's, Marlborough Girl's and St Hilda's, all well known netball schools. The girls beat St Hilda's 25-23 which was a great result and enough to put them in a play off for 9th - 12th on finals day. They played in a local derby against SGHS, winning 31-22 to take on Villa Maria in their final game. Injuries and illness hit the team once again, but the girls fought to the bitter end, going down to Villa 27 -22, an overall finish of 10th.

A great result for the girls and their coaches to finish the 10th netball school in the South Island. Congratulations to the girls and a big thank you to the coaching staff, Jasmine Hamilton and Fleur Anderson for all their wonderful work and outstanding support of the girls in the build up and while at tournament.

The Year 10 team were hoping to do one better than last year and make top 4 of the South Island. They also had 32 teams in their grade and started day one with three convincing wins against Geraldine, St Margaret's and Dunstan High School. They continued their winning way into the second day, beating Verdon, SGHS and Ashburton High School to put them through to the major semi finals and top 4. Wahoo!!

The girls played St Hilda's in their semi, with nothing separating the teams, it was tied up at quarter, half and 3 quarter time with our girls going down by 1 at full time 37 - 36. An absolute nail biter of a game that could have gone either way, but on this day, it wasn't to be CSC. The girls were understandably devastated, but they did themselves, their coaches and supporters proud and took the court against Rangi Ruru Girl's later that day, winning 40-31 and finishing 3rd in the South Island. A record result for CSC!

Such an extremely proud moment for everyone involved. The girls played 8 games, won 7, lost 1 game by 1 goal, a fantastic result for a dedicated group of girls. Congratulations!

A hug congratulations and thank you to the coaching staff Sophie Erwood and Tyler Bezett for your time and expertise with the team. Also, to the supporters who made the trip to Christchurch to support both teams, a massive thank you.

Many memories were made during this successful week of netball - we look forward to hearing all about it after the holidays!
