Otago/Southland Ski Champs
Students braved some pretty full-on conditions while competing against local schools at Coronet Peak.
On Sunday 2nd August, our Ski Team of Annalise Hammond, Nicholas Hammond, Oliver Gill and "CSC Student for the Day" Ferguson Hammond competed at he Otago/Southland Ski Champs at Coronet Peak.
We were lucky to be able to stay at the Southland Ski Club the night before, with the weather being the main topic of discussion. A small storm was forecast, with heavy snowfalls predicted. Despite this, the call came in from organisers that the event was on.
In the morning we got ready and headed out into the snow. Snowfalls, as predicted, were consistent and quite heavy (check out the images and videos!) but everyone was still keen (including the organisers, not so much the coaching staff!).
In low visibility, the students competed in the slalom event which involves following a course down the mountain as fast as possible. Our students competed well, with Nicholas Hammond coming in 3rd place in his category.
After a bit of a de-brief (and chance to get warm and dry) we moved on to the slopestyle, where students compete for points based on tricks using ramps and rails. Again, the students did well in trying conditions and Nicholas again placing third.
Despite the weather, it was a fun day out and it was great to see students pushing themselves. CSC ended up in first place in the Mixed Teams category, so we had lots of representation on the podium!
A huge thank you to Emma Hammond who supported the team!
