U15 Rugby-South Island Tournament
The Central Southland College U15 Rugby team had a highly successful and memorable week at the South Island U15 Co-Ed Rugby Tournament, held in Oamaru during Winter Tournament Week.
Our young and determined side flew through pool play with an impressive run of dominant performances. The team recorded convincing wins over Waimea College, Rolleston College, and Dunstan High School, showcasing strong teamwork, discipline, and flair.
In the quarter-final, the boys maintained their momentum with a clinical 35–0 victory over South Otago High School. The performance was a testament to the team's defensive structure and attacking creativity, keeping South Otago scoreless and putting on a strong attacking display.
The semi-final saw the team face a well-drilled Mt Hutt College side. Our boys matched them physically and tactically in the first half, heading into the break 5-7. However, Mt Hutt gained the upper hand in the second half, pulling away to take the match 31–12. Despite the result, it was a gritty and courageous effort from the CSC boys who never backed down.
Central Southland College finished in the Top 4 of the South Island – an outstanding result for a young, developing team, and one that reflects the effort and commitment the boys have shown throughout the season.
Throughout the week, the boys were an absolute credit to the school and their families. They conducted themselves with maturity, respect, and great sportsmanship at all times, both on and off the field. Their positive attitude, behaviour, and camaraderie made them a pleasure to take away and excellent representatives of Central Southland College. The team were awarded the "best team" of the tournament by the referees and opposing coaches, this recognition validates what a special group of lads they really are.
Special recognition goes to Ben Robson, who was named Most Valuable Player for Central Southland College, thanks to his consistency, leadership, and standout performances throughout the tournament.
Additionally, Ferguson Hammond was honoured with selection into the South Island Tournament Team, joining 20 of the top players from schools across the South Island – a fantastic achievement and well deserved for an outstanding tournament.
A heartfelt thank you must go to our dedicated coaching staff – Dougal Cameron, Pete Hammond, and Willie Swale – whose time, expertise, and support were instrumental in preparing the team and guiding them through a successful and enjoyable tournament. The boys appreciated you all and this was testament when they performed the school haka in the school car park on their return to Winton.
Thanks also to our two Yr 13's and 1st XV players Tom Smith and Raff Cowie - who showed great maturity and leadership helping the team in the lead up and during the tournament - both boys were a massive help and an absolute pleasure to have involved with the our junior boys.
A huge thank you also to the families and supporters who contributed to the success of the week.
The future of rugby at Central Southland College looks bright.
Well done, team – you’ve done your school proud!
