Southland Readers Cup

Hannah Ingram —

We had a great afternoon at The Southland Readers Cup held in Invercargill.

During Term 2, Hayley, Alex, Sullivan, and I competed in the Southland Year 9 Readers Cup. For this, we had six books to read and make notes on (‘Neands’ by Dan Salmon, ‘Afaski Woman’ by Lani Wendt Young, ‘The Bone Tiki’ by David Hair, ‘How to Bee’ by Bren Macdibble, ‘In Our Own Backyard’ by Anne Kayes, and ‘The Tomo’ by Mary-Anne Scott).

On the 4th of July, we went to Ascot Park Hotel to compete against James Hargest College, Southland Girls High School, Verdon College, and Wakatipu High School. For each book, we had to answer six questions. These could be the colour of a car, names of paintings, or details of a logo and so on. So we had to know the books in a lot of detail. In the end, we managed to come third after a tie-breaker with James Hargest.

Overall, I think we put a lot of effort into this, and we all enjoyed it. I would also like to thank Mrs Shaw for the huge amount of work she did to help us prepare.
