National Secondary School’s Athletics Championships
This year the National Secondary School’s Athletics Championships were held at a wet and wild Newtown Park in Wellington.
We had a team of 14 athletes compete across a range of track and field events and achieve outstanding successes despite trying conditions. Two of our athletes placed. Jaidyn Busch was able to retain her title in the Senior Girls’ shot put claiming gold with a massive distance of 16.51m.
What a wonderful achievement for Jaidyn and a great way to finish off her schooling at CGHS. Courtney Hillyer showed consistent form throughout the 2k Track walk to gain a bronze medal for the second year running.
Other notable successes are as follows:
Aria Carroll - 4th in Senior Girls’ 100m – (12.48secs)
Rosie Trotter - 6th in Senior Girls’ 1500m – (4.51.05)
4x400m relay team (Alice Fissenden, Lili Ovendale, Paris Carroll, Rosie Trotter) 6th place in Senior Girls’ event – (4.12.19)
Madeline Sharpe 7th in Junior Girls’ 3000m (10.33.20)
Meg Blanchfield 9th in Junior Girls’ long jump – (4.47m)
Izzi Leifi 10th Junior Girls’ shot put – (10.72m)
The team all had an enjoyable weekend away experiencing some phenomenal competition at what is one of the pinnacle events in the athletics calendar. I wish these girls well for their summer athletics programme and look forward to another successful athletics season next year.
H Burson.
