Netball Tournament Week Success

Robin Brown —

The Senior A Netball team departed Christchurch via van at 8am on Sunday, 27 August and arrived in Invercargill after a lengthy 8-hour journey.

The next day the team had two encouraging wins on day 1 of the South Island Secondary School's Competition, against Verdon and Dunstan. On the second day they defeated Mt Aspiring, to top pool H.

In the afternoon game the team fell two points short against James Hargest in post pool play. On Wednesday they won game 5 against Central Southland; game 6 was a key game against Cashmere. If the team won, they would finish in the top four.

During the season, there would only be a couple of points between the two teams, however not in this tournament; Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora won 39-24!

This meant the team made semi-finals. Unfortunately, a semi-final loss against Columba (who eventually finished first in the tournament), put the team in the 3rd /4th playoff game against St Andrews. They hadn't come close to beating this team all season, but the girls held their heads up and worked hard, eventually defeating St Andrew’s 35-30! This placed the team third in the South Island, and earnt them a spot at the Secondary Schools Nationals to be held in Auckland 3 – 6 October.

Overall, the players were outstanding on and off the court, and we all had a lot of laughs while down in Invercargill.
