End Of Regional Winter Sport… Roll On Tournament Week

Robin Brown —

Regional winter sport has come to an end with the last games being held this past Wednesday, although Club netball still continues for another week.

The season has been successful for many but, again this season, there have definitely been challenges along the way with the impact of Covid and winter flu bugs. It was great to see lots of students participating in a range of sports both socially and competitively. Here are the results of our top teams:

Badminton: our A team won the Premier competition

Basketball A team: a 5 – 8 placing in the Whelan Trophy Division 1 competition

1st XI Football: 1st place in the inaugural Connetics Girls Premier plate final

1st XI Hockey: 2nd place in the Canterbury Hockey SSP Connetics competition

Netball A team: 3rd place in the Supernet competition

1st XV Rugby team: winners of the Miles Toyota championship

Squash team: 5th in the A/B grade competition

So to winter tournament week …..

This is an exciting time for all our teams competing across the country in their various tournaments. A lot of mahi has taken place over the season and teams are ready for the challenge of competing against other teams in the South Island and throughout New Zealand, plus the fun of travelling and staying together.

The week begins this Saturday with the 1st XV Rugby team travelling to Dunedin to take part in the South Island 1st XV final against St Hilda’s College. As well, Alice Barnes is our only rider competing in the Southern Tour in Blenheim on Saturday and Sunday.

Following on from these two events we have:

  • The Basketball A team is travelling to Invercargill on Tuesday for the AA Premiership Basketball tournament.
  • The Climbing team are climbing in the South Island event being held in Christchurch next Thursday and Friday.
  • Our Equestrian team of 15 riders is taking part in a new South Island Schools Equestrian event being held at McLean’s Island Equestrian Centre all next week.
  • We have two hockey teams travelling to the North Island; the 1st XI is competing in the Federation Cup in Napier and the 2nd XI are off to Taupo for the Chris Arthur Cup.
  • Lastly our Senior A netball team is off to Timaru to compete in the SISS Senior Netball tournament.

We wish all teams a successful week and look forward to viewing some games via livestreaming and looking up other results online.

Go well Christchurch Girls’ High School /Te Kura o Hine Waiora !
