Jessie Clarke Memorial Prize for the Appreciation of Jane Austen 2019

Abigail Rainey —

Congratulations to the girls who participated in this competition in Term 2.

The selected text Emma is centred around a heroine Austen believed, “no one but myself will much like.” However, the competitors seemed to find much to both enjoy and critique in this, the last novel to be completed and published during Austen’s lifetime. The overall winner was Rosie Walbom from Year 13. Her insightful essay involved a perceptive exploration of the ‘unapologetic’ way Austen explores challenging ideas from the opening line of the text. She was also able to dissect the extracts provided and offer thoughtful analysis and alternate ways of reading the characters selected. Second place was awarded to Kathleen King, in Year 12, who explored the class distinctions evident in Emma in a mature and perceptive way. Well done girls!
