CGHS Senior A Netball

Sam Adams —

The CGHS Senior A Netball team had an awesome week away in Dunedin during winter tournament week, coming 3rd out of 32 teams in the A grade of the South Island!

This was a major achievement for the team as CGHS hasn’t made the top 4 since 2002! Winning against Taieri College (36-22), South Otago High School (38-22) and St Kevin’s College (37-30) in pool play on the first 2 days resulted in us coming 1st in our pool, putting us in to the top 16.

CGHS were on a winning streak, winning against Dunstan High School (40-21) and Marian College (40-21). These 2 wins put us in the top 8! We then went head to head with Columba College to make top 4, winning 34-26.

This win put us into the Semis, where we played Christchurch school rivals Villa Maria College. The girls were absolutely thrilled and were willing to put everything they had into this game. This was a tough match as the score was even for almost the whole game, until the final 2 minutes when Villa sadly pulled away winning 32-26. The girls were disappointed but held their heads high and congratulated Villa on their win.

The team then had a new goal; to come 3rd in the South Island.  Only Nelson College for Girls’ stood in our way. CGHS came away with the win (37-35) ending the tournament on a huge high!

Becoming 1 of the top 5 teams in the South Island, we are now continuing to train and prepare for the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Tournament, where the top 16 school teams in the country head down to Timaru to battle it out for the title.

This is the second consecutive year that CGHS have qualified for this tournament, which we are immensely proud of.

Congratulations also, to Shana Ali who was selected in the South Island Secondary Schools Talented Players squad for the second year in a row; what a great achievement!

A huge thank you goes out to our coaches, Rosie and Chloe and our manager Mrs Brown. There is no way that the team/week could have gone as well as it did without you guys.

The support throughout the week from family and friends was also awesome to see and made the week even greater than it already was. J
