Creating community partnerships – Parent Group Information

CGHS Publications —

This is an invitation to attend parent group programmes run by Manu Ka Rere (Community youth and Mental Health Service).

Their service is for young people, who may be facing mental health and/or related issues. The service offers short-term intervention which includes assessment, treatment and support. They are based at Odyssey House in Burnside.

Purpose

To bridge the gap between mental health and parents’ experiences with their youth by creating an open space for parent-to-parent support.

Topics

Some topics/psychoeducation discussed and covered in the support group reflect feedback from both young people and parents and may include;

  • Communication (listening, validating, empathy etc)
  • What’s going on with the teenage Brain (Brain development)
  • Screenagers (a person in their teens or twenties who has an aptitude for computers and the internet.)
  • What do boundaries look like for teenagers
  • Guiding teenager’s choices into learning experiences
  • Spending time with your teenager
