Junior Volleyball Teams - South Island Championships

Matt Bilsbury —

Following the Canterbury Championships, two Christchurch Girls' High School | Te Kura o Hine Waiora teams entered the South Island Junior Championships, where 53 teams competed for the title.

After strong results in previous years (2nd in 2022 and 3rd in 2023), expectations were high.

The Junior A team began the tournament slowly but found their rhythm midway through the second day, playing some of their best volleyball. They secured a semi-final spot against Cashmere, the team that had beaten them in the Canterbury Championship. With an air of focus and redemption, the girls completely dominated Cashmere, winning 25-21, 25-13. In the final against a strong Nayland team, Christchurch Girls' High School | Te Kura o Hine Waiora pushed hard in the first set but ultimately lost the match, finishing as runners-up in the South Island—a fantastic achievement.

A special congratulations to Tusi Reupena and Lily Porter, who were selected for the All Tournament Team at the South Island Championships. This recognition highlights the fantastic players they have become.

The Year 9 A team focused on development rather than wins, made impressive progress. Head Coach Mr Laing and student coaches Helen Woods and Lily Spark rotated players evenly and encouraged the team to execute an advanced game plan, which will pay off in future years. While the team secured a few wins, the most significant outcome was the improvement in skills and teamwork, setting the stage for future success.

On Friday Christchurch Girls' High School | Te Kura o Hine Waiora had over 20 players participate in the South Island beach volleyball champs. It was a great day as many students got to experience beach volleyball for the first time. Shaye Edwards and Kendall McGregor claimed the bronze medal in the Y9 grade.
