South Island Secondary Schools Korfball Tournament

Robin Brown —

Last weekend, 28/29 October, our Korfball team participated in the South Island Korfball tournament, which was held at Main Power Stadium, Rangiora.

Korfball is one of the few mixed (female and male) team sports and our team played each game with ‘designated males’. They acquitted themselves very well, however the aerial play of the boys, especially rebounding, saw the opposing teams have a slight advantage. Our team, a combination of year 9 and 10 players, played 6 games over the two days.

Results were as follows:

  • Christchurch Girls' High School/Te Kura O HIne Waiora 3, Hillmorton High School 8
  • Christchurch Girls' High School/Te Kura O HIne Waiora 6,
  • Kaiapoi High School 18 (Kaiapoi were runners-up in the tournament)
  • Christchurch Girls' High School/Te Kura O Hine Waiora 13, Middleton Grange
  • Christchurch Girls' High School/Te Kura O HIne Waiora 4, St Margaret’s College mixed B 5
  • Christchurch Girls' High School/Te Kura O Hine Waiora 11, Shirley Boys’/Avonside Girls’ 15
  • Christchurch Girls' High School/Te Kura O Hine Waiora 10, Riccarton High School 4

The final win against Riccarton resulted in 7th place for the team. The tournament was a challenging, but definitely fun, experience for our enthusiastic korfball team.

Thanks to Laura Mooar who coached the players.
