New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Triathlon Champs

Olivia Kikstra —

The New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Triathlon Champs took place in New Plymouth last week and Christchurch Girls’ High was lucky enough to have three girls racing.

In the U16 race Pixie Cockerill took 8th place. She started well, leading coming out of the swim and was in the front pack for the bike but the second transition proved to be a game changer and she was pushed back in the field finishing a respectable 8th.

In the U19 girls we had Olivia Kikstra and Alyx Day racing. Olivia finished 4th after a battle for 2nd and 3rd in the run and Alyx finished 16th; she had the fastest run time in the U19 girls.

We then had the tag team relay which involved two CGHS students, Olivia and Pixie, and two Christ's College students, Kyle Houston and Sam Idiens. This team effort resulted in us placing 2nd in the U19 category for the tag team.

There was some tough racing for everyone and lots of valuable lessons were learnt. Overall it was a great weekend with great results with plenty of training to be done before Wanaka next year.
