First XV Rugby Success

Maria Daly —

Last weekend the Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora First XV rugby team travelled to Dunedin to play St Hilda’s in the South Island secondary schoolgirls final.

Dunedin put on a beautiful blue sky day and the team were pumped to defend their title from 2019 (COVID has prevented the South Island final since then).

Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora started with a hiss and a roar, piling on the pressure. St Hilda's made errors which Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora capitalised on, scoring three early tries. The team got the ball in hand and produced some of their best rugby of this season, attacking St Hilda's across the park with hard running and off loads. Tries continued to come with Poppy Baxter and Harriet Cochrane scoring hat tricks. St Hilda's managed to break the strong Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora defence in each half but could not string phases together to maintain pressure.

The 60 - 10 win means that Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora will head to the First XV top four final in Palmerston North next week.
