CGHS 1st XV Second In The Top Four Rugby Finals

Craig Thornhill, TiC Rugby —

After winning the UC Cup and the South Island Final, the 1st XV travelled to Palmerston North for the Top Four Finals.

This was a first for CGHS Rugby and we didn't quite know what to expect. The semi-final was played in wet conditions against Onehunga High School. Onehunga had a size advantage, but our girls played more skillfully, spreading the ball wide and moving Onehunga around the field. We scored quickly and our girls became more confident. CGHS ran out 57-7 winners, qualifying for the final on Sunday.

CGHS faced Hamilton Girls’ High in the final, a big, athletic and experienced team who were reigning champions. Hamilton started the game hard and fast, scoring quickly. While CGHS had some very positive periods of play, we kept turning the ball over and were made to pay by the giant Hamilton forwards. At halftime CGHS was down 41-0. Our girls still had their heads up, and the second half was better rugby from CGHS, with the final score of 58-7 being harsh on a CGHS team who had played some excellent rugby in the final and kept pushing to the end.

The 1st XV would like to thank the coaches and management, especially super-coach Jamie Livingstone, assistant coach Anna Livingstone and especially camp mother Tamara Toaolamai. A special thanks to all the parents and supporters who made their way to Palmerston North to support the girls!
